Home Improvement Question

Hey Ladies,

Was wondering who does the home improvement things in your house? Like cute little shelves or window treatments or hanging the photos? DH is rarely home due to travel, but I have little skill with a hammer. Was just wondering how it works in your house? I'm dying to get this place decorated with some inexpensive pieces I can run out and get myself!

Re: Home Improvement Question

  • My husband likes to hang thing,  but I hate it because often they are crooked.  I try to get to it before he can.  Big Smile  I have been doing all the plastering in anticipation of our move (I like to cover nail holes).

We have a great level,  it has a laser line and attaches to the wall with tiny pin (doesn't leave a visable hole).  It make hanging anything very simple,  all you need to do is put the nail on the line.

  • I do!  I've actually helped build a couple of houses (everything from laying hardwood to installing tile & patching drywall), so I'm pretty handy with power tools.  DH is great with many things, but this is not his area of expertise.  I just grew up around it, I don't think I ever saw my parents call in professionals for this kind of stuff, so I learned from them.
  • Hmmm...I have a Home Depot right around the corner...Confused

My husband has OCD and hates crooked hanging items. Hehe. How easy is it to hang those little individual shelves?

Now I'm thinking I should go sign up for one of the those classes/workshops they give at the Home Depot!

  • You can definately hang those up! The shelf sets usually come with instructions and all the hardware. If not they will at least let you know all the tools you'll need.

  • Awesome. So who wants to come down to Boca Raton and help me?

Actually, my sisters (in Williamstown) are thinking of flying down here in a few weeks.....maybe I can put them to work!

  • In our household I do most of the decorating/hanging pictures/shelves. DH is very good with electronic/computers/electrical stuff, but not so much with a hammer/power tools. I would def look into taking a class at Home Depot. My co-worker took a class on crown molding and her house looks great!

BTW, you should post pics of your new place. I know you and your DH just moved into the house after the wedding, right?

Yeppers! We moved in the second week of October. We have some furniture, but not a lot of little decorative touches yet. I'll post some pix soon!

  • Shelves are usually easy,  just need to make sure they are level.  The only tricky thing is to make sure you use the right screw of nail,  for weight,  but the instructions should tell you that.

Certainly put the sisters to work,  one of the greatest things about family is free labor!

  • We try to do most things together.
  • I grew up doing lots of odds and end repairs with my Dad. I can spackle, paint..stuff like that.  DH tries, but is not very mechanically inclined when it comes to tools. He is awesome at hanging shelves. Outside, forget it.

In the end, we wind up hiring a handyman for many things. This house however needs waaay too many small repairs....I think more than we realized.  Our list has snowballed, we ran out of money way before ideas and we've put a lot of things off.

In fact, everyone should prepare themselves to be thoroughly UN-impressed with my house! LOL

  • It's definitely a group effort here.  We have completely gutted and redone our whole house.  And when it comes to decorating, group effort.  He puts holes in the wall (nails or screws) because he's super anal and has to have control over such things.  But, I can do it myself haha.

My dad is a very skilled craftsman.  We built a 25 ft in diameter gazebo for my sister's wedding.  She was the one passing shingles between my dad and me, I was the one using the band saw to cut them (I was like 16).  haha.
