Your laundry detergent....

What do you use?

How much is it usually (if you don't mind me asking)?

Any comments you want to make about it or others you have tried. Thanks!

Re: Your laundry detergent....

  • I typically use Tide, All Small and Mighty or Wisk based on what is on sale and if I have coupons.  I'm not sure of cost since I usually don't pay full price; I think detergent is expensive.

  • what ever is on sale... I don't see much of a difference.
  • I use Tide, I feel the smell lasts longer. I usually just pick it up at Wal-Mart for $6-$7.
  • I think we have ALL right now, but we usually just go with whatever is on sale.  I usually stretch my detergent dollar by throwing about a cup of vinegar in each load and then only using half the amount of detergent.  My clothes still come out clean and the vinegar makes them smell extra fresh.

If she doesn't respond to this post, you might want to page EverAfter07.  She makes her own detergent. She had given me the formula once and it seemed really easy, but I never did try it.  I still have the email she sent me somewhere, so if you don't hear from her, I'm sure I could find it if you are interested.

  • I use Method concentrated from target (it's not cheap) and DH uses Tide powder (big box as cheap as $5 with coupons I think). When we combined households I couldn't tear him away from it (he wears jeans and tees to work and is convinced it makes them cleaner) and I like the feel of my clothes with the liquid because I wear office attire, delicates.

  • What do you use?  I use Cheer Color Guard.  I have to be careful about brands because I'm allergic to a lot of cleaners.  I can't just change to other options to try because I usually end up having rashes.

How much is it usually (if you don't mind me asking)?  I buy it at Target usually on sale and with a coupon and stock up on several containers at a time.  Definitely compare stores and try to use a coupon.

I use dryer sheets and Downy Free and Clear laundry detergent, both also bought with coupons and on sale.

  • We use All Free and Clear.  I think we were using Tide previously but I think the All was less expensive.  I just ordered some Crunchy Clean detergent from

    http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5760585

Mainly I ordered it for cloth diapers that we're going to try but I might switch to it for everything.  The girls on EFF rave about it.  Lillian also sells it on her site moderndiapers.com.

  • My mom always used Tide powder, so that's what I had started out using. That is until Dh and I were buying some clothes and, I don't remember the conversation, but the sales girl inquired what we use so i told her. She relayed that Tide is the harshest of the detergents and tends to break down the clothing fibers quick than other ones. I believe I did find something online about it,too. I also don't like powder. it seemed no matter what I did, some would end up crunchy on clothes at the end of the cycle. Sooooo.... we currently use Cheer liquid. I also add Oxy podwer to every load. The amount depends on the size and how stinky it is. The Oxy is the only thing that gets the dog smell out or Dh's stink form sweat or his towels. Plus I make sure I put the Oxy in first, then after a minute or so, i put in the detergent after the Oxy had a chance to mix in a bit. Now we have the front loaders that you fill the drawer on the outside of the washer.
We use Downy fabric softener adn then Bounce in the dryer as well.
One last thing, I persnally LOVE the front load washers. My clothes get cleaner in them. The only way i can tell is that is i wash something in a regular...a dogbed cover or blanket they had been using, it still has there smell on it after washing from a reg. washer. Done in the front load, it comes out nice an fresh smelling.

  • We use Tide Free (2x contentration) for HE washers.  We use it for our clothing as well as Caitlin's since it is fragrance and dye free.  We usually wait until we see it on sale and then stock up.  We usually pay $10 for a bottle and it lasts for a long time.  HTH!
  • I always buy a detergent that's "free & clear" since ones that have a lot of fragrance make me itchy.  I tend to buy Purex Free & Clear the most just because it's usually the cheapest, I think $3.50/for the smaller bottle.  If that's not available I'll go for either the Arm & Hammer Free & Clear or the All version.

I also use Purex fabric softner for sensitive skin and non-scented dryer sheets.  Downey makes a fragrance free liquid softner that's good too, but Purex is cheaper.

I don't notice a difference in any of the detergents we use, so why pay more?  I also use vinegar in my laundry to help freshen my clothes since our detergents are fragrance free.

  • We use the Kirkland environmentally friendly condensed stuff from Costco.  I don't remember how much it was, but it was the cheapest per ounce.

  • I use Tide HE and I have no idea how much it was because we bought a big container a few months ago and because we have an HE washer we use such a small amount and just switched to using it from the All Small and Mighty we were using.

  • Oh and I really like the Tide because it smells so good. I also like Gain because of the scent. I was using All Small and Mighty but it had a musty smell, or "old" smell to it... it didn't smell fresh, but like it was washed and then sitting in a drawer for a few months. I got a headache from it.

  • We used to use Tide but now we use the Kirkland stuff.  It's an liquid not a powder.  We switched because it was cheaper and the scent of the Kirkland stuff didn't bother me.
  • I buy whatever the cheapest "free & clear" brand is, since DH is sometimes allergic to the fragrances.  I used to use Tide regular scent, since I knew he didn't have a problem with that kind, but it's just so expensive.

I haven't been using Fabric Sofener liquid for a few months now and haven't really noticed a difference, except that the clothes don't smell like the fabric softener (used Downy regular scent, DH was ok with that kind.

I do buy the cheapest "free & clear" dryer sheets I can find, because it keeps the static down.  I tried to go without them to save money, but the amount of static cling was CRAZY!

  • We use Arm & Hammer Essentials Mountain Rain (green bottle).  I love it because the Arm & Hammer doesn't give me a rash like some detergents do, plus the smell is ah-ma-zing!  It last for a long, long time! And it's not so girly that DH complains about smelling "froofy."

Before that, we were using just plain Arm &Hammer free and clear (no scent, which kinda made my clothes smell ...weird. lol

I always get good deals at Giant (last two times I bought, it was buy one, get one) on the A&H too.  Plus, it's ultra concentrated and lasts a while.  I just buy my dryer sheets at Costco (the Kirkland brand).  I don't use fabric softner liquid.

  • I use the TIDE HE detergent.  With Febreze :)

It can be anywhere from 5.99 to 9.99 but when we bought our Maytag W/D we got coupons for 3 years free!  Once that is over, it will be a challenge to find it on sale!

I've always used Tide, even when we didn't need the HE stuff for our washer.  I think it works really well and smells good too.

  • We use All Free and Clear because DH has sensitive skin.  We buy the big jug at Sam's Club, proabably pay $12-$15 dollars, and it lasts 9 months - year for just me and DH.
  • All Small and Mighty, though I am thinking of switching to Seventh Generation because they are natural, disclose all of their ingredients and don't test on animals. I'm  having a little trouble getting over the price jump.
