Ring appraisal?

Good morning everyone!  I'm usually over on the TIP board, but I have a question for you this morning.  I need to get insurance for my engagement/ wedding bands, but I need the appraisal first.  I was going to do it through the shop we got the rings at, but they closed down recently bc of the economy.

There is a place in Hershey I spoke with (Au, Inc), but it's over $100 for the appraisal, and we're kind of cash strapped right now.  So, do you have any ideas on other places I could check out?  Where did you get your rings appraised?  Thank you, I appreciate the help.

Re: Ring appraisal?

  • I don't have any other suggestions, we got mine appraised at Littman's where we bought it and paid $100 to have it done so that's probably pretty standard.  Maybe some of the non chain stores have cheaper rates.
  • We got the rings from Whitehall jewelers- I should have included that their price was $75.  If around $100 is standard around here, I'll just save for another couple of months, man up and get it done.  We do have a service policy that will be honored by another company associated with WJ if one of the diamonds falls out or something in the interim.
  • Have you contacted your insurance company for their suggestion?
  • I know your in the Hershey area so I would probably check with the Jeweler's Bench in Hershey or also the jeweler on Main St in Palmyra (i think it's Herbs or something like that?).  My dad ordered earrings from the one in Palmyra and had a good experience with them.  I don't know the exact address but they are right next to Hallow's Eve tattoo shop.  The other place I could think of to call and check their price would be Leitzel's in Myerstown.

I haven't ever had to pay for an appraisal because our jeweler always gave them to us for my larger stuff knowing we needed it for insurance reasons.  Unfortunately they closed also :(

  • I actually live in Palmyra, the place there is probably two blocks from my apartments.  I will go check them out and see if they do appraisals.  Thank you for the replies!
  • For what it's worth, if your DH still has the bill of sale for each ring, they would work for the insurance company until you can get the appraisal.  They need a statement including a description of the jewelry and an associated price.
