Breeder question:

Anyone know of anyone in Central PA that breeds- Cockapoos or lhasapoos? My parents have a lhasapoo and we LOVE her. But I'm told they are prone to have kidney infections.

If not something like them...anyone have alot of knowledge in this department?

Re: Breeder question:

  • I don't know of breeders, but have you checked petfinder.com?  There's plenty of mutts in shelters, including lhasa apso/poodle mixes and cocker spaniel/poodle mixes.  I just did a quick search for lhasas in the Hbg range (not sure of your location) and two lhasa/poodle mixes popped up on the first page of results alone.

And I'm not quite sure what you mean by your last sentence, so I can't offer an answer on that. :)

  • Sorry I meant if not that type of mix- something with the same look or demeanor.
  • Ah... I'm a poodle girl myself, so anything poodle or poodle mix is fantastic in my book. :)  I have allergies, so the fact that poodles don't cause reactions (at least in most!) is how I originally ended up with one growing up, and I've had one ever since.  I grew up with standards (which are the big ones, usually around 50 - 60 lbs), but got a mini (max out around 20 lbs) the summer after my sophomore year of college.  We added to our menagerie last summer when DH decided he couldn't deal with having just a little dog anymore (he grew up with boxers and English mastiffs!), but whatever we chose had to accommodate my allergies, so we ended up with a golden retriever/standard poodle mix.  She is more or less full-size now, at two weeks shy of her first birthday, and weighs in around 55 lbs and approx. 24" at the shoulder, so a considerably bigger dog than you're talking about.

Anyway, demeanor-wise, poodles are known for being highly intelligent, loyal, and great with kids.  Mine are also just about the sweetest dogs I've ever encountered, and super-friendly.  They also have long life spans (Cal, our mini, is estimated at 18-20; Maisie is 14-16), which is a good thing in my book!  The poodle traits tend to come through in most mixes as well - including what we've seen with our golden/poodle mix.

You'd be able to check just about anything mixed with poodle and would have a good chance of similar personalities to what you're familiar with - check out petfinder; just do a search for poodles and all the mixes will pop up, as well.

  • Please please check out shelters. Anyone who breeds that mix is a backyard breeder and can't be trusted. There is no such breed as a "cockapoo" or "lhasapoo". They are mutts pure and simple (nothing wrong with mutts. I have two beautiful ones). PLEASE do not go through a back yard breeder to buy a dog when there are shelter pets dying every day! I guarantee you will find one in the shelters.

  • I have been researching breeders for two years now and I would be happy to help you find a good, reputable breeder, but unfortunately cockapoos and lasapoos are not breeds, they are mixes.  It's not really possible to find a reputable breeder of these mixes.  Reputable breeders only breed to better the breed standard, which is why you won't find reputable breeders of mixes.  Reputable breeders also offer great benefits of helping you with your new dog, offering good expertise, and health testing (OFA for hips/knees, CERF for eyes, and other breed specific health testing).  They stand behind their dogs because they have put a lot of effort into breeding good dogs that follow the standard and have good health checks.

Since you said that you didn't know a lot about breeds, I might suggest with starting with some research on traits that are of interest to you and that fit with your lifestyle.  There are some decent breed selector quizes that you could google, but I would also go to these websites - yourpurebredpuppyakc, animal planet (look at the breed descriptions)

Mixes however are wonderful too and you can find them through shelters or rescues.  You could also consider breed specific rescues.  Since both of the mixes are poodles, you might want to try poodle rescues like these:

If you are interseted in going to a reputable breeder, once you have a breed in mind go to the national club for that breed as a start to get a list of breeders who have signed the breeder code of ethics.  It's a good start but not the only things to consider.

Here are the national clubes for the mixes involved:

    Poodles

    Lhasa Apso

    Cocker Spaniel

Please feel free to ask any questions too.

    Good luck Tara!

  • I wanted to add that I think that poodles are wonderful dogs, very intelligent and loving.  You seem to prefer smaller dogs, but I've made many standard poodles too that I would love to have.

  • I'll echo what Abbie and Stacey said about cockapoos and lhasapoos not being real breeds. Not that there's anything wrong with mixed breed dogs. I love mutts! It's just that if you get one from a breeder, you are supporting bad breeding.

Like Stacey said, the only good reason to breed dogs is to better a breed. There are certain standards in size, coat, temperment, etc, that dogs in a particular breed are supposed to live up to. For example, the miniature poodle is generally between 10 and 15 inches tall, low shedding, and intelligent. Anytime you breed two miniature poodles, you can expect to end up with these characteristics. All these designer dogs (like all the poos and doodles and whatever) aren't real breeds so there are no standards.  You could get a cockapoo that is more like a cocker spaniel or more like a poodle. Different puppies in the same litter can have characteristics that are more like a spaniel or a poodle. There's no way to know what the puppies will be like or what the puppies' puppies will be like down the line.  So just because your parents have a lhasa apso x poodle mix that you love, doesn't mean that another lhasa apso x poodle mix won't look and act completely different.

If you still really want a designer mix, definitely check petfinder and rescue organizations.  That way you can get what you want without contributing to the dog overpopulation problem or supporting backyard breeding :)  Good luck with your search!!

To add onto Stacey's list of rescues, also check out Watchung Mountain Poodle Rescue - they're based out of NJ, but my parents (who live in the Hbg area) got their current standard from them.  They were fantastic to work with.

  • Check out greenfieldpuppies.com

Not sure what breeds they have listed there now, but that is where I found a breeder for my English Bulldog.

  • Tara, please don't buy such a dog from a breeder. They are not a breed of dog. Those are mutts and you can get them at a shelter.  Try www.petfinder.com and search for poodle mixes.

KahunaChic, this is called a puppy broker.  Please don't recommend that site or buy from them again.  Reputable breeders don't need anyone to sell their dogs for them and they don't sell dogs via the Internet.  Yuck!

  • I'd check out shelters or rescue groups.  You can start on the internet.  I think one website is petfinder.com  You'd be surprised as to what you can find!

  • The pp's summed everything up quite well!

Please look at a shelter!  You'll be pleasantly surprised at what you'll find there.  That's where we got our two "mutts".  I love mutts - they're usually one-of-a-kind!

Best of luck with your search!

I purchased Kahuna from a breeder who listed on this web site and "knock of wood" have not had any problems with him, hes 3 now.

  • I am very glad you have not had problems. That doesn't mean you should recommend an unethical practice.

I am not trying to be mean or bash you or your dog.  I am sure he is a joy.  I am just a very tiny voice speaking against a huge problem.  There are too many dogs and recommending a puppy broker that works with breeders who breed mixes as well as a variety of other dogs contributes to that problem that I am trying to work against.

HTH.  Please consider a shelter or a reputable breeder next time (and that doesn't just mean a nice person).  And please don't recommend them again.

  • Ditto everything Pep and TheLinkBride have said.  Please don't buy a mix - you're only supporting irresponsible breeders while other dogs (the EXACT SAME MIXES) are put to sleep in shelters every day.  Yes, even puppies.
