Why can't you lose weight when you're pregnant?
Does that mean if you need like 3000 cals to maintain, you have to continue to eat that?

Re: Why can't you lose weight when you're pregnant?
You can - a lot of people do - you just gotta do it in a healthy way (duh). No fad diets.
Many peopel feel really tired in their 1st tri. Your body starts going through a lot of changes almost instantly, so keeping up a routine alone might just not be possible. They say you can usually maintain your routine, but for me I just had to quit. I was down to walking 1 mile on the treadmill and if I did that i had to be on the couch the rest of the night and I didn't wanna do or clean anything. So I opted for caring for my house and pets over extra excersize.
Also, your diet might be out the window. If you have m/s you need to eat what you can keep down, not what your diet says. I have several aversions to helathy things (no italian food, no cooked veggies), and the only thing that keeps me from getting dizzy every 3 hours is carbs carbs and more carbs. Also, its common to be starving but then feel full after only 4 or 5 bites.
You do need about 300 extra calories a day, but remember that those wont go straight to your thighs. Your blood volume increases, your boobs increase, your uterus grows, you gain amniotic fluid, and those all weigh something. So you could be burning most of those calories just with all that growth and development - but you'll only see your weight on the scale increase.
Lurk on 1st tri and you'll see people say that some have gained 10lbs or so, while others have lost 5lbs or more. It just depends on your situation and where you are going into it and how your body deals with everything.
here are two links on it:

I feel that way too, mw. I feel like I "escaped" m/s partially because i'm good at managing my nausea from being a nauseous person frequently in every day life, lol. There was a girl on 1st tri who was like "I had m/s so I ate a piece of toast andI still felt yucky so I kept eatting toast and now i've had 6 pieces and still feel bad". WTF? who does that? and i'll eat icecream everyday if I want to - but i'm not eatting a gallon a day, kwim?
Also, sorry for the tangent, but do you get mad when you see actresses/models gaining like 60, 70+ lbs in pg and then go on a weight loss plan? It drives me batty. Everyone says to not gain more than 40lbs ( unless you are having twins I guess) I mean, you can't pick up any pg info without that weight issue popping up. WHY would they think that was ok or healthy? annoying!
I think the idea is that when you are pg you shouldnt be restricting, or "dieting" but rather, eating enough and healthy stuff. I know sometimes women who get pg when they are "obese" do lose through the pg because they eat healthier and are 'burning' more from being pg.
A woman on my local who got pg at well over 200 pounds (she posted this... I want to say in the 250 range? I forget...) is about 4 weeks out now and weighs LESS now than when she started... and her dr has been ok with it since she is eating enough and she and baby are healthy.
For someone at an avg or even overweight... probably not the healthiest thing to lose (though many do in the 1st tri due to food intolernaces etc)
See, I'm always worried about getting pregnant as I am now. And eating enough to maintain my current body weight is more than I'm happy eating.
I'm glad to hear I could just eat normally and heathily and not worry about hitting that higher amount of calories.
But this is totally hypothetical as I am not pregnant, nor am I planning to be soon.
I just wanted to poke my head in
and comment on the 3000 calories - that's for wimps, 4000/day was my magic number in college (provided by strength coach), it is actually hard to get that many calories without eating junk; if you eat regular food you have to eat a ton and drink stuff with calories - gatorade/powerade.
I do have a sister who "ate for 2" and probably put on 75-100 lbs with her first kid and she just packed as much junk in as she could with the "eating for 2" excuse, it was kinda gross
According to OK! Weekly, she had both gestational diabetes and some other condition (preclampsia?) that were dangerous and she should maybe never get pregnant again. Let us not discuss why I was reaking OK! Weekly, kthxbai.
Yeah, but if you're already underweight, used to eating like a bird and now suddenly you're allowed to eat whatever you want, it's understandable that you might go kind of crazy (I think Milla Jovovich said something to this effect and she gained like 70 lbs while pg). I personally gained too much weight ( about 40 lbs ) and now am having a not-fun time trying to get it off.
