Re: Dakota Fanning in New Moon

  • She could work... she could pull off the creepy kid thing pretty well.  Jane needs to be a strong character, and from what I've seen of DF's acting in the past, I'd think she's capable of it.

I will say, though, that in reading the books, I never pictured Jane as a blonde...

  • I don't think I ever pictured Jane that young, but I love DF so I think she will be great.

  • I can't believe how much she's grown up!
  • I never pictured Jane as a blonde.  That's what I hate about movies based on books.  I always have a picture of what I think the characters should look like.  Then when I see the movie, they always look totally different.

This reminds me of one of my English teachers in high school. She said that any time a movie is based on a book, you should read the book first. Then you can form your own picture of the character without being influenced by the movie.  Once you see the movie, you'll never be able to disregard the movie's interpretation of the characters so you won't always get the same impression that the author intended.

That is exactly why Tolkein didn't want LOTR made into movies. He didn't want the imagination of the readers limited by the interpretation of the movies because no matter how great the movies are, there will always be a limitation.

I have a rule for myself that I won't watch the movie until I read the book. I saw The Davinci Code and The Notebook without reading the books first and now I can't read the books because any differences really bother me and I can only picture the characters as the actors.

I read the Twilight series before I saw the movie and I felt the movie was lacking from what I imagined Twilight to be so I am so glad I didn't see the movie first. Now, many of the characters were exactly how I pictured them (like Edward, Carlisle, and Alice), but Bella was more upbeat than Kristin Stewart in my mind and I'm not sure how she'll be now in the rest of the movies that come out, especially BD.

After what my teacher said, I try to do the same thing.  The few exceptions where I have seen the movie first, I just didn't enjoy the book as much as I think I would have had I not already seen the movie.  That or I don't even bother to read the book since I've seen the movie, even if I know that the movie is much different from the book. Case in point, the Lord of the Rings! I guess Tolkien knew what he was talking about :)
