Update on baby shower situation & question
My instincts were right - apparently attending this baby shower for my SIL is mandatory in my MIL's mind.
DH told her that we're going to be spending Christmas with my family (out-of-town) the weekend of the shower and apparently she was p!ssed and demanded we re-schedule Christmas (which we've already re-scheduled 3 times now and our next mutually available weekend is the end of February).
Am I/are we being unreasonable by refusing to re-schedule Christmas with my family again just so I can attend a baby shower with a bunch of people I won't know just so my MIL will be happy?
Re: Update on baby shower situation & question
No, you're not. ?It's?incredibly?unreasonable of her to expect you and your family to reschedule something that was already planned. ?Not only does your life revolve around SIL's shower, but your family's lives do as well??
?
Now, in complete candor, when I got the invitation at the beginning of this month, we were supposed to do Christmas with my family tomorrow. But, within a week, we had to reschedule for my dad, and the shower weekend was the only available weekend until late Feb.
I have no idea why this shower is a big deal. It's not like it's her first grandkid or that SIL and I are super tight or anything.
(Have I mentioned that the only two people I will know at this shower are my MIL and SIL?)
This. She is being completely unreasonable. ?
Me too. I hate showers. I really didn't want to have one for my own wedding, even.
For real, bridey.
God, my bridal shower was a nightmare. I mean, no offense to my aunts who threw it for me, but everything about it was bizzare. First, they scheduled it for a day I said wasn't available because it was a friend's birthday party. Then, they scheduled it in my hometown, despite that 2/3 aunts throwing the party, myself, my entire bridal party, my friends, and most of my family live 3 hrs away from said hometown, and all live in the same city.
Then, they decided to serve only ice cream sundaes and cookies, but had it at 12:30 pm. Also, they invited a ton of people I didn't know, like my grandmas' friends.
Most of the gifts were kitchen-y, so that was cool, except one group of atendees decided to do this multi-faceted holiday decoration gift thing. So, they had like 10 different bags filled with different trinkets and crap for a bunch of different holidays. Theoretically, that could be fine, except nothing was my style. All gawdy and perfume-y. And most had price stickers from the local dollar store still attached.
There also was a weird tribute to my youngest cousin that had been dead almost 2 years at that time.
OMG, that sounds awful.
Mine was actually fine. The weirdest part was that my mom and my stepmom had never actually met until my shower, despite the fact that my stepmom and dad had been married for almost 20 years at that point and for many years had lived just a couple of miles from my mom. Awwwkward. Fortunately, it all went well.
Just wait, Mr. P... I sense a couple's shower in your future.
Well, the shower invite wasn't sent very far in advance, and you have other plans that are just as important.
Stick to your guns!
Stock the bar showers are not only tolerable, but kind of fun. I "hosted" one at the groom's mom's house - I organized, but she provided food & alcohol and a place to have it since I was unemployed. Everybody brought wine, spirits and/or bar accessories. And there was a lot of drinking. That was good times.
Ditto
He rejects the principle outright. The situation hasn't had the opportunity to come to blows yet.
Man I hate showers. I actually refuse to go with a certain side of my family, 'cause I can't handle them without an ally (Mr.P). Mine was totally devoid of games, but sitting in the very middle having everyone watch me open a pile of gifts =
Your MIL is being crazy. I've known bridesmaids not to show up to wedding showers. Sh!t happens that's more important, and Christmas with your family a month late definitely qualifies.
SIL probably only cares about the gift anyway!
Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
