guess how much it costs to give birth....

i just got a copy of the hospital cost for the birth of my baby.  (this does not include the dr. costs for the birth).....

total bill is $31,936.83!!

i wonder how much the dr. bill will be.

i have total respect to those couples waiting to save more money before ttc!  babies are so expensive (although my little girl is worth every penny!!)

  • I was about to ask if you had insurance!  Wow!  This is good info to know though.  I think my insurance only pays 80% as well.
  • We don't get a hard copy of our hospital bills unless we request them, so after reading this, I just logged onto our insurance website for giggles....

So far, I've added up about $45,000 for my pre-natal care through delivery.  Our one and only co-pay was $20. Half of these doctor's names I don't even recognize, but they were paid, so I assume they are the anesthesiologist and pediatricians that saw Nico in the hospital.

It's amazing the difference between the amount they billed and what they actually accepted from the insurance as payment.  Can you say inflated charges??

    Thank God for insurance!

  • oh my.  I am glad that you have insurance.. that would be one big bill to pay...

I am also glad that I only have to pay a co-pay for all of my care.  It was just $10 for the OB/GYN for the whole pregnancy, and I paid a co-pay for each visit to the Peri.

I am quite curious now to see how much my whole pregnancy cost... I was high risk, and had quite a few u/s's, as well as a stay overnight around 36 weeks....

  • this was probably pretty stupid of me, but I've yet to call the insurance company and see what this is going to cost.
  • just be glad she didn't end up in the nicu...from me delivering to when Luke was released from NICU...$125K
  • wow that is insane
  • I am birthing my kids at home in the tub....no midwife or anything.  We are going back to basics!
  • Makes me sooo glad that we popped two out on our phenomenal California insurance plan at zero out of pocket... not even a co-pay for prenatal or delivery. ?No co-pay for pedi visits either, until we moved here :(
  • Oh i should add of that $125k we paid $700 that's it!
  • Yeah, it's ridiculous. I was getting bills from doctors I didn't even know I saw, but were in on my c-section. Between being high risk and seeing my regular doc and a 6 days stay in the hospital...my bill was huge! Thank goodness for insurance, I don't think we paid much over $1k.

The really sad thing about this, is those charges were knocked down because the insurance company has people who's main job it is to negotiate them down.  People without insurance would end up paying the full bill and since they're not a high-volume customer like the insurance companies are, they have very little chance of getting anything at all reduced.  This country seriously needs to rethink the way the whole process works!

  • I never even saw how much it cost to have Elijah.  That was covered 100%.  I miss my old insurance.
  • When I had KJ it was just over $47,000.  We paid $5 at my first OB visit and that was it.  I didn't even have to pay for ATU testing when I lost part of my mucus plug early.

  • Wow. The most we can pay out of pocket is $2k, so we just put $2500 in an FSA (since I have other prescriptions to pay, plus copays).

  • I never thought about the expense!  Thank goodness for insurance!
