cure for shin splints?

Is there anything (stretching?) to help with shin splints?  After sprinting and doing the elliptical they are sore today.  TIA!

Re: cure for shin splints?

  • I'm not sure if this is proper advice, but a friend of mine was plagued with those in high school and was told to walk around on her heals to help with the pain. Although I'm sure Jen (jjenkins) might have some good advice.
  • There's actually a strengthening exercise you can include in with your normal strength workout.  The exercise is called a Tibialis Anterior Raise and its a lot like a reverse calf raise.  You stand lean slightly into a wall (back against the wall) and you keep the heels of your feet down but you lift your toes towards your shins.  On the return you don't want to let your toes go all the way back to the floor...you want to keep some muscle tension in the shin muscle itself to help strengthen them.

I would do this for at least 2 sets of 12 reps on non-consecutive days (i.e. like any other strength exercise).

Hopefully that description makes sense...if you're still unsure you can email me (jprice916@gmail.com) with your email address and I can send you a pic from work because I know the training software we have has a pic of it using a stability ball.

  • ok great, thanks Jen!  I will be sending you an email, I think the diagram will be helpful!
  • No problem...I am working tomorrow so I will email the pic tomorrow sometime in between appts.
  • The thing that worked for me was getting shoes that better fit my feet. For me, that meant New Balance instead of Adidas!

I'm sure Jen's advice is about as good as it gets. She's the expert!
