Can you really negotiate realtor fees?

I'm back on the kick of buying a new house again (nothing new there, right?)...but I'm just wondering if you really can negotiate fees with a realtor before you sign, instead of the standard 3%?  Anyone know if that's really true, and would it work in this market?  It pains me to think how much a realtor working for us would get from selling our house, and then us buying  a new one through him/her.

Re: Can you really negotiate realtor fees?

  • Not sure about your question.  Have you considered trying to sell it yourself?  You are in a nice neighborhood and have lots of curb appeal, I think you would have better luck than average going that route.

Are you still looking at Walden?  I haven't been since they built.  I need to make a stop on my next Wegman's visit.

  • I'm a little afraid of trying FSBO in this market, but maybe it's something to reconsider.  My parents have done FSBO several times successfully, so maybe it's still a possibility, especially since we're not in a time crunch or anything.

No more Walden for us either.  I am afraid to live in a construction zone for the next 10 years.  We're looking at Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg, and possibly Lewisberry.  My Dh has finally allowed me to expand the search radius, too, so that we don't necessarily need to be in a walking community (i.e., Camp Hill Borough).

  • I think there's definitely the possibility of being able to negotiate especially with the market the way it is.  I know a few years ago even when my parents sold the land their old house had been on they were able to negotiate slightly and that was when the market was good.  I think it also depends on how long a contract you would sign for.  Good luck with your search Jill!!
