need some half bath inspiration

i need a change in our downstairs half bath!  can i see your half bath pictures and/or any inspiration pictures you may have?

this is the only picture i have of the half bath now (it's small!):

image

in the picture you only see the vanity and wall color. directly behind where i am standing to take this picture is the toilet.  i would like to keep some purple in there (a dark plum perhaps?) and even refinish the vanity (white, black, walnut?).  i don't know, any suggestions? thanks!

ps-this picture was taken 2 1/2 years ago when we were looking to buy...so that teddy bear, it's the previous owners!

Re: need some half bath inspiration

  • Allie I'll do some searching when I get home today because I think Ihave a folder at home with some rooms done in plum colors.

I think a plum colored wall would be really sharp...not sure of the amount of natural lighting but judging from the reflection in the mirror it looks like you at least have one window in there?

If you do plum colored walls I would paint the vanity white/winter white.  If you still wanted to go dark walls you could lighten it up with some white beadboard which is super easy to install.  You should check out RXJenna's bio...I know she used to have a really dark plum powder room and it was pretty.

Is the countertop yellow/gold?  If you didn't want to go the route of replacing/updating there's a technique out there to paint countertops.  I know there are couple ladies on the d&r who've done it.

  • jen - actually there is no window in that bathroom, the lighting is just really good!  i was thinking, maybe doing all 4 walls in a plum color would be too dark? i don't know...i have been wanting to re-do the bathroom since we moved in, but i can't decide what to do.  even though i would like to replace the counter top because it is a barf-tastic (is that a word?) color, but it's in great condition.   i will repost this on d&r for some more input, but i would love to see what you come up with later. thanks a bunch.

  • Wow...you have great lighting in there then!  I'll look to see what I can find...unfortunately I am having issues with my other laptop and now it won't turn on.  I'll post what I find.

You could also do a grey tone and do the plum as an accent wall.

  • ok this one isnt really a half bath and its pretty funky but its plum with white cabinetry...

  • this small snapshot is more the grey-toned lavendars but still...

  • That first pic you posted Jen would be a great jumping off point for Allie since the countertops in that bath kind of mirror her countertop in her half bath.  I was having a hard time visualizing plum/purple walls and white cabinetry w/ the current color of the counter, but that pic you posted proves it could work.  Good job!
  • I was thinking that same thought when I came across that...I'm just curious why a bunch of them aren't showing up now :(
  • wow jen, you rock. thanks!

ok, so i am really digging the plum color on top and a lighter color on bottom.  what do you think if i do a plummy color on top and SW kilim beige on the bottom with white cabinentry? i have a SW plum color picked out, but i can't remember the name right now. i will check at lunch when i go home and then post the name.  i have lots of kilim beige leftover from painting the common areas in my house.  what color white would you suggest for the vanity?  and do i have to do a chair rail or is there another way to seperate the colors?

or, another thought popped in my head.  how about an accent wall in the plum color with kilim beige on the other walls?

    any other suggestions?

    thanks so much.

  • or should is scrap the kilim beige and just do all 4 walls in the plum? hmm...decisions, decisions.  the more i look at the first picture, the more and more i am liking it.
  • I think you could honestly do either all plum walls or do the plum as an accent wall with kilm beige as the other walls.  We have kilm beige in our powder room and it would definitely work with the plum.  If you tell me the SW name I can look at it and look at their white colors too for your cabinet.  They have tons of whites.  I have both of their fan decks (the big one) and the smaller one with the Concepts in Color swatches.

I probably wouldn't do chair rail between the two colors though...i would just do the accent wall thing if you wanted to use both.

  • jen - i was thinking of sherwin williams wood violet for the plum color.  what do you think?  do you have any other SW plummy colors to suggest? (i have both fan decks as well.)
  • Too funny...my mom was initially going to paint her powder room that color but now she's decided to use SW Silvermist.

I think it depends on what you envision...do you want a warm toned plum color or a cooler tone?  The wood violet is gorgeous with the kilm beige but its more on the cooler side.  Here are the colors that I think really pop with the kilm beige...in addition to the wood violet.

Large Deck: strip #120 Kimono Violet (its dark and vibrant but looks really neat with the kilm)

CiC Deck: strip #16 Blackberry (again dark but gorgeous color)

CiC Deck: strip #16 Carnelian...this one is interesting because its more of a raisin color with brown-ish plum tones.
