Laid Off...: (

I kind of knew it was coming it was a last one in first one out thing. For the longest everyone was discussing it and then a couple months ago the manager told us that we wouldn't have to worry about anything. Well I guess she was pulling our leg, because I was laid off. Honestly we are okay financially, but I just feel like shit. I have worked since the age of 14 non-stop and now to be out of work truly sucks. I have been hardcore job searching, but mostly lots of interviews lately, no offers. I know the market right now sucks, but man I really want to work.

What job search engines do you use? I normally do craigslist, but it is slow. monster and careerbuilder have a lot of those agencies that can give me a headache.

If anyone knows of people hiring I have background in accounting, customer service, purchasing, human resource, ..mostly anything office related.

Thanks in advance for letting me complain here. I have avoided telling mine and DH parents, because they are worry freaks and at this time I can't deal with that. The only people who know are my brother and sister.

Re: Laid Off...: (

  • (((hugs)))  Keep your head up and I'll be crossing my fingers that you find your dream job soon.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that you were laid off. I'll keep my ears open for anything. I'm sure something will come your way. I can imagine how you must feel. Dh found himself out of a job again this year. It sucks! I'm of the opinion that everything will work out and I'm sure it will for you. GL!

  • Oh man, so sorry. ?The timing really sucks. ?If you are interested in working in the fashion industry you can search under www.fashioncareers.com and www.apparelnews.net. ?You could totally put your talents to work in the admin part of that industry.?

Otherwise I am no help to you for the job search, since i am in the same boat.

Did you get any kind of severance? ?Apply, apply, apply for unemployment.?

  • oh no the timing really does stink, but i'm thinking since you are finacially ok, and you've worked since you were 16, you should take this time to enjoy prepping for the holidays.  Decorating your house, giving yourself a little rest and then once Jan hits start job searching.

    Good look!!

  • I'm so sorry!  I will pray that you find something soon.  Have you tried Accounttemps, Robert Half, Apple One?  All staff accounting and office personnell.  I will be contacting them too soon...ugh!  Good luck!
  • I was only there for a couple months so they did give me a little severance. I have been visiting some of the agencies, but I feel they want so much from you and they do a little. I don't know I just get really bad vibes from them.

Unemployment can you exhaust this and I heard they only give you a percentage of what you actually made. I have not looked into it, because I'm hoping to get a job soon. It might be my next step though.

  • I'm so sorry. I hope you find a great job very soon.

My dh was laid off twice within a year and it really sucked. Definately file for unemployment. The paperwork isn't too bad and while it won't pay enough to cover what you were making, having money coming in really does help especially if the job search takes longer than you expect.

  • I'm sorry to hear that you got laid off.  May I ask what area you live in?  Or areas that you are willing to work in?  If I hear something, I'll let you know.

I leave in the south bay area and would travel about 30 miles. Thank You.

  • Check out Indeed.com as they pull from all of the major job sites and put them in one spot.

Definitely file for unemployment...a percentage of your income is better than nothing!  You can file online even, I believe.

I would for sure go through the hoops at the agencies...it can't hurt to have them working for you while you are conducting your own search.  I work in HR and often times call on agencies because I don't have time to do the search myself.  So, they will have jobs that you will never find out about because they are doing the search.

Good luck and I'm sorry you are having to go through this at such a horrible time of year.

  • Sorry to hear that. I can imagine it must be tough. Are you still in college(your bio says this) or did you graduate yet? Also do you or will you have a Bachelor's degree?

I know my company has postings for Financial Analysts with 2+ years work experience.
