Talk to me about your holiday decor...

Ours has shifted as we've moved. For example, we don't have a FP here, so we hang our stockings on the bannister that comes down into our den, and pretty it up with a little garland of berries and such.

We put our tree in the dining room- partially because the kids don't play in there so I find it safer, but also because my walls are red- it just looks too damn good in there not to.

I also put up a door sign (that will go up today). My grandmother made us a light up snowman in her ceramics class that will go in our entryway window this year that has our last name on it. I have miscellaneous decor that goes up through our main floor and our den, as well.

What do you do to decorate for the holidays?

Re: Talk to me about your holiday decor...

  • Kitchen: Christmas hand towels and place mats for the island and little Christmas/winter knick knacks

Livingroom: more Christmas/winter knick knacks, mistletoe in the entry way there, Christmas tree, Christmas pillows for the couch (snowman, gingerbreadman and santa that I got a Joanne Fabrics), Stockings on the banister for the stairs, with holly berry garland, my little nativity scene on one of the shelves

Doors: Christmas wreaths  - bells hanging from the doornobs

Doorways: poinsettia garland over the doorways

Windows: Candle lights in the windows

  • Dining Room:  My skinny pre-lit in white tree goes in the dining room in the corner tucked next to the spiral stairs.  It looks puny because we bought the tree for our small house in NC.  Eventually I want a bigger one.  So that's decorated in red, white, silver, irridesent, snowmen and snowflakes, etc.

I put garland pre-lit in white on the spiral stairase and railing to the upstairs.  I hang a huge red bow from the railing on the upper landing.

Mantel in the dining room gets fully loaded with candles, ornaments in a glass vase, and our stockings hang from the mantel.  I also have lots of snowmen to go around the house.

I also have battery-operated candles for the windows, I want to do the entire front of the house but all but one kitchen window is old so they're covered in plastic.  Also, my 2nd story dining windows are way out of reach, so I'm in search of any that might be remote controlled - though I'm not expecting to find any.

    Sunroom:

This year we're putting up a pre-lit palm tree for DH.  I don't have it up yet and I don't have much to decorate it with, but it will go up.

    Outside:

I have 8 strangs of very large multi-colored lights, not sure where they're going yet.  A tree in the very front of our yard near the street has some lights on it but the outlet on our driveway lightpole is not working.  Not sure if we'll get it working this year.

I want to get a very large fake wreath to hang on the front of the house.  I will probably just put a big red bow on it and hang it up.

  • I was JUST listening to xmas music and putting up decorations =)

I stick mainly to our front room/parlor. Statues/figurines....xmas candles....hanging signs on the in and outside of the door. The wreath goes on the house because we have both a wooden and a glass front door so it won't fit and I never got a hook. This is where the xmas three will go too, in the front window. And there's a fireplace but I can't hang from the concrete so I have little J, O, and Y statues with hooks attached that I place on the mantle and hang the stockings from.

One of my favorite things is a long hanging card holder that I put at the entry way to the kitchen and stuff full of xmas cards we receive. I put some other assorted candles throughout the kitchen and holiday soaps and hand towels. OH, this year I bought this cool berry tree and put it on the kitchen table with matching balls in a bowl next to it.

We're undecided on lights this year. We have the perfect house for icicle lights - all peaks etc like a gingerbread house. We'll see if I can convince DH.

That's about it. I don't do candles b/c we don't have a lot of front windows. Nor do we really have bushes to do lights on...

  • We have our fake, pre lit tree with white lights in out living room.  I LOVE the pre lit trees...soooo much easier.  Our stockings are hanging from our banister that leads upstairs in the living room, no garland or anything with them, but I am sure that looks really pretty, I think I may have to pick some up!  We have two little wooden sign things (one hanging from our side doorknob in the kitchen and the other from our coat closet doorknob in the living room.  I have a sparkly red and green jingle bell wreath hanging outside on our front door and battery operated candles in our front windows.  Lastly we have icicle lights hanging only in the front of the house outside.  I really would like to get those white lit up deer to put in the front yard, but we will have to see about that.

All of your decorations sound so pretty!

  • My living room is under construction so no tree or much for decorations yet, at least inside.  That is where most of our decorating gets done; and several of the living room items have bee relocated to block other possible locations:(  Hope it's done soon- I LOVE Christmas decorations!

The outside; well that's a different story. DH started weeks ago putting up lights so we could turn them on Thanksgiving night.  I think he spent at least 15 hours on the lights outside.  Max loves lights so last year after Christmas we bought a ton of stuff for outside when it went on sale.  We got over $400 worth of stuff (plus what we already had) for under $100.  We have icicle lights along both of the porch roofs (we live on the corner so we have basically two fronts to decorate) and the garage.  The garage doors are outlined in colored lights, as is one of the porches, one whole side of the house and all the bushes around the side and front.  We have a small section of fencing for our pool, which has icicle lights at the top, colored lights on the bottom and around the bush on one side of the fencing.  Our small tree out front has lights and a lighted Santa (all lights; not the plastic kind) that waves.  We have an light up elf that holds a candy cane, two white lit-up deer, a lit-up snowman and a colored stack of lit up presents that has something (can't remember what!) that comes out of the top.  It's very busy but DH did a nice job making it look neat and organzied. Max loves it!  And the best part- at least according to Nick- is that all kinds of cars slow down to look when they go by:) Funny thing is- until we had Max, DH hated Christmas.

  • I just did a lot of this !!

We hang a wreath on the front door and two wreaths over our garage.  We put up many white lights on the trees outside.

We put up a tree with multi colored lights, we hung stockings on the mantle, christmas knick knacks thru out the downstairs,  nativity scene on our console table.  I didn't do anything up in the bedrooms.

We put out the Christmas towels in the kitchen, garland over the sliding glass door in the kitchen, Christmas candles

     I love Christmas!

  • We have stockings hanging on our shelf and lighted garland and a lighted wreath outside, but with the child who gets into everything- this is as good as it's going to get this year:
