Hi ladies - even though we've been in Summerville for around five months, I've been putting off finding new doctors (yes, I am visiting NYC in December, and yes I scheduled an appointment with my dentist up north, haha).
However, I really can't be putting this off, especially since we're discussing TTC. I'd really like to hear some rec's on great OB/GYNS, and even though I am in Summerville, I *will* drive to Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, etc if the doctor and associated hospital are wonderful. It's a bit scary to me to not even know which hospitals are the best in the area
Thanks in advance!
Re: Charleston OB/GYN recs?
I am a labor and delivery nurse working at MUSC downtown. I want to offer you a few suggestions.
What type of care do you want, now and especially during pregnancy? If you'r elooking for a more personal and natural, woman-centered experience, I would recommend seeing a midwive rather than an OBGYN. A great practice is http://charlestonbirthplace.com/default.aspx.
However, if you have any health complications like diabetes or chronic high blood pressure, an OBGYN will probably be a better bet (though midwives know their limits, and you would have to tlak them individually). I strongly recommend http://www.mtpleasantobgyn.com/ for GYN care (I cannot personally attest to their OB care as I have never been pregnant, but I've heard wonderful things about them!). I go to Dr. Bradford and love her. I have heard great things about all the docs in that practice.
Also consider hospital priveledges- Summerville Reg is a pretty decent hospital for low-risk OB care. St Francis in West Ashley and East Cooper in Mount Pleasant (where the Mt Pleasant group delivers) are also good. I do not reccomend any other hospitals in the tri-county area for low-risk OB services.
MUSC is without a doubt the best hospital for high-risk pregnancies. Most of our docs are great and our nurses are, of course, awesome! But it is not the place to go if you want a natural, personalized approach to childbirth.
OK I've rambled a lot now, but truly consider what you want out of your birthing experience before you choose. Do a lot of research, and pick a doctor or midwife that you TRUST above all else.
Good luck!!!
*many hugs*
I calld up the Mount Pleasant group, and since it is for an OB appointment, I have to wait for a nurse to call me back. I did notice that the doctors are affiliated with both East Cooper and Roper hospitals. On the 1st tri board, some girls say that Roper is a great hospital, and I would be more inclined to go there, since it's about 15 minutes closer to where we currently live (since moving plans may be up in the air for a while). I didn't see you mention it, but do you know anything about the hospital?
Thanks again!
I live in Summerville and I just delivered my twins 7 weeks ago. I go to Maggie Evans at Lowcountry OBGYN they are affiliated with East Cooper and I had a great experience delivering there. E-mail me if you have any questions: kerri.marsh@gmail.com
