Hello! I am moving to the Nashville area next month and I am trying to figure out OB/GYN and hospital stuff as I am nearly 10 weeks pregnant. I am hoping to get an idea of the different options for where to have my baby.
Where did/will you deliver your child(ren)? Was it a good experience?
Who is your OB/GYN?
Did you hire a doula?
And, if you have any experience with TRICARE, that's an added bonus! I have family in the area, but I'm hoping to get a broader sampling of opinions.
TIA!

Re: Hospitals/L&D?
some people swear by baptist. it is a baby factory that can be good and bad.
i had my 3rd at williamson medical and was very happy. my doc was great dr. dykes.
i had my first 2 at a community hospital in boston and was very happy there too. my friend used to work in the nicu at brigham womens which is the best l&d in the country but she said don't go there for a normal pg since you will get better attention at a community hospital since they are trained for high risk. that said my other friend was at the brigham and it is probably the only thing that saved her life and her baby's when she developed severe hellp at 30 weeks
First of all - Congratulations J
I didn?t have a ?typical? pregnancy, so I hope you don?t mind me responding, but I wanted to post my experience.
When we first found out I was pg, we were trying to decide between delivering at Baptist or delivering at Centennial. We never considered other more "regional" hospitals because we love near downtown. We decided to go with Baptist because 1) my dr. was more comfortable there (she said she?d go with whatever we decided, but we pushed for her opinion and she finally said that she does 80% of her deliveries at Baptist, so . . . .) and 2) being pg with twins we were allowed to tour Baptist?s ?new? NICU, and were beyond impressed by it.
Anyways, my dr. didn?t know we?d ?chosen? Baptist, but recently sent us there when we started having problems. Just her knee-jerk reaction, I suppose. (My high-risk OB also primarily practices at Baptist) DH and I spent a week in L & D, under horrible circumstances . . . . but I will say that we were so blessed by every single one of our nurses. We just sent them all thank you cards for the way they cared for not only me, but also DH and our terribly overbearing and obnoxious families J
I realize that my situation, thankfully, wasn?t normal, but it was recent ? if you have any specific questions you?re welcome to email me at bmarielee at aol.com.
I had my daughter at Baptist this past June and had no complaints about the experience. My doctor (Dr. Erin Yu of Women's Medical Associates) delivers at both Baptist and Centennial, but all our friends recommended Baptist so we went with them. The nurses were great, everything went smoothly. A lot of the labor rooms are new and really nice. I didn't spend much time in mine since I ended up having a c-section shortly after I got checked in, but it was very homey and comfortable.
Congrats on your coming baby! Where in Nashville will you be living?
If you are going to be in the Nashville/Davidson county area then your 3 primary options are going to be Centennial, Baptist and Vanderbilt. All of which are good hospitals and you will probably get different recommendations for each. All 3 have NICU's and if I remember correctly, Vanderbilt has the highest trauma level rating of the NICU's but that doesn't necessarily mean it is better, just that they have been certified at that level. They do have a Children's Hospital too.
All that being said, I am planning to deliver at Centennial. My doctor delivers at both Centennial and Baptist so I had the option of either. I chose Centennial because I have several friends that are nurses there and in their NICU and that have delivered there. I also have friends that have delivered at Baptist with positive results. The only negative I have heard is one friend had some issues with her lactation consultant at Baptist but that was one person over 2 years ago. I really don't think you can go wrong with either place.
My OB is Dr. Cassidy. She is with Women's Medical Associates of Nashville. The group is all women and I have been really pleased with them so far.
Good luck to you! If you live in a surrounding area, there are other options as the previous poster mentioned. Williamson Medical is good. So is Summitt in Hermitage.
Thank you, ladies! I appreciate your insight!
I plan to live in the Hermitage area. While Summit is right there, I plan to choose a hospital on its merits rather than simply its location. It seems that I have some work ahead of me. My DH is military, so I have to find doctors and hospitals that will take my insurance.
I look forward to getting to know you. I've added this board to my favorites, so this is not the last you will see of me!
Hey girl!
Glad to see you're doing well and almost out of your first trimester!
My best friend JUST delivered at Williamson and I am going there to tonight so I am excited to check it out, b/c that's closer to me than downtown, but you probably wouldn't want to go there. I've always heard Baptist is "the best" and planned on going there until I switched Drs. So now I'm looking to use someone who will possibly go to Williamson if I like them, but for now I'm seeing an RE anyway.
I'm due in February and my Dr. is with Tennessee Women's Care and delivers at both Baptist and Summit. Can't tell you from first-hand experience since this is my first baby and I haven't had any hospital experiences since living here for three years except for an ER visit for my hubby at Summit (which was a great experience compared to the medical care we received in our past home state of Nevada).
However since we live in the Mt. Juliet area, for convenience sake we are delivering at Summit...my Dr. even recommended it. The last thing I want to do while I'm in labor is drive past a hospital five minutes away from me to get to one 25 minutes away...time and time again I've heard people swear by Baptist...it's almost like the trendy thing to do around here..LOL..yet other people tell me how old and out of date the facility is. Again, not my first hand experience.
My hubby works for a health care company and had both the hospital and doctor researched/background check and everything is top notch.
I delivered both my kids at Baptist (son 2 years ago and my daughter this past August) and had wonderful experiences both times. I had a c-section both times as well, so I spent 5 days each time at the hospital. Baptist has recently upgraded the 7th floor L&D/post natal floor and the rooms are really nice. I had a horrible scare while there (my 2 year old had a seizure at home while I was in the hospital with my daughter who was 2 days old) and the nurse held my hand while I COMPLETELY lost it while waiting to hear what was happening with him. She was so wonderful and kept me relatively calm while in the hospital all alone while the rest of my family was with my son.
My Dr. is Dr. Oldfield with TN Women's Care.
