So I'm looking at moving to back to Portland. I grew up in the area and am getting married and moving back. My question is what area of Portland is the best? We are looking at North Portland but we really have no idea where we should be looking. We are looking for a inexpensive area that has that alternative hip Portland feel to it. Any suggestions for a good neighborhood?

Re: Where to live?
My H & I live N. Portland - the Arbor Lodge neighborhood. We really enjoy it.
I found this website helpful when checking out neighborhoods http://www.portlandneighborhood.com/portland-neighborhoods.html
I just looked at your bio and thought "she lives in Russia" LOL
Anyway, I don't know much about "No Po" as the kids call it, but my girlfriend Jenn lives there and LOVES it. She lives on Lombard and Russet, right by I-5.
"The best" is pretty subjective depending on what you're looking for. North Portland does seem to be rather popular with the young, professional, hipster crowd. I think a lot of Portland, particularly on the east side, has that alternative hipster thing going on, though. I think Portland Monthly Magazine does an issue each year where they rate all of the neighborhoods by the numbers (education, crime, median income, median home price, etc). Here's a link to their latest article, which was published in April of this year.

That's a great tool, MrsPDX--thanks for posting!
To the OP, bear in mind that "inexpensive" and "alternative hipster" tend to be mutually exclusive; if you're wanting to buy, you'll likely have to compromise quite a bit on one or the other.
