Cat people please get in here!!

As most of you know we have a new cat. Our Lucy died this past August and a little over a month later we adoped Tink. She is the exact opposite of Lucy. Lucy was older and she was a gentle rain compared to the hurricane that is Tink. Tink loves to climb and explore, she jumps on things in the house and loves to go over the backyard fence even with the barriers Bob put up. She climbs up between the blinds and the windows...she pretty much creates chaos for most of the day. LOL. This brings me to the Christmas tree that I'd really like to put up today. Isn't there something you can spray that will cause a cat to avoid it and maybe other things around the house? I've had cats all my life but none of them like this one. Any...ANY advice you can give me would really be appreciated.

Re: Cat people please get in here!!

  • oh Tink...

Several things you might could try...first, have you emailed Darrien about Tink? She might have better tips than anyone of us in here...

But, I would probably put the tree up...sans ornaments...and see how she reacts to it and what she does to it through the day.

Also, you could fill a small bottle with water and give her a squirt if and when she messes with it. That has worked with Monkey for a few things.

  • Oh this reminds me of the first time that we took Toby up to my inlaws for Christmas. When we got home from dinner, their tree was on the floor!! They now tie theirs to the wall! (Honestly though, the tree was so crooked that year that if I breathed too hard, it would have fallen!)

I also mentioned to Candi, that I tie my glass ornaments on the tree w/ cute ribbon so that he won't break them b/c he still loves to bat them off.

  • Re: the tree falling over!!! Oh man that's my worst fear. I've got some swarovsky crystal ornaments I've collected for so many years...I have thought of putting the tree up without those but I'd just as soon not even put up a tree than to leave those off...anyone want to 'borrow' a little kitty just through Christmas? LOL
  • I have 2 cats - one is mellow, and one is exactly like you just described Tink.  In everything, on everything...

The first year I had her and knew she was nuts, I did a few things:

    1. I tied the tree up - I just hid some eye hooks, and used clear fishing line - just to make sure it was secure and wouldn't fall over  in case she decided to climb it.

    2. I put all the 'soft' ornaments on the bottom of the tree - so if she batted them off, they wouldn't break - and I didn't put any of my really good/sentimental ones on just in case.

In the now 7 years I've had her, she's never tried to climb the tree.  She will bat ornaments on the bottom of it (so I keep the soft ones down there), but the most she does with the tree is drink the water out of the tree stand.  And I now have my Swarovski ornaments and other sentimental ones on there, with no worries.

I'd say put it up, but maybe decorate it only a little bit to see what she does?

Lauren80 - I tried the water gun with my crazy cat.  It doesn't phase her.  :-)

  • Jane some cats have an adversion to citrus as well.  Not all but it might be worth a try to maybe squeeze the juice from a fresh orange into some water and then spray the base of the tree.  I have four cats and I know that two of them despise citrus smelling stuff...avoid the area it has been sprayed with.

Also the water bottle works for me on the other two.

  • The spray you're thinking of is Feliway (or something like that).  I found it at Pet Smart.
