IN nestie moving to the south- question about snakes!

Hi-

My family is in the process of moving from IN to northeast Louisiana, and I'm wondering if anyone here can comment on snakes.  I'm horribly afraid of them, and my husband has already found one in his office since he's been down there (he's a football coach so his office is out in a fieldhouse, but still it's not something that we've ever encountered up here in Indiana).  I'm wondering if any of you have frequent run-ins with snakes in your house, or how often you see them in your yard.   I'm hoping it's not as bad as I'm thinking it is...

Thanks for any insight!

  • I live on the MS gulf coast. We see snakes but not frequently.  I guess it's just something you have to do you research on.  Some snakes are good snakes that eat mice and rats.  Just do your research and learn the different types that are found in your area.  You really shouldnt worry about them too much though.  Good luck with the move and welcome to the hot humid south!!!

  • I've lived here my whole life and have only seen 1 live snake. A few dead ones in the road sometimes, but only 1 that was alive.
  • Can't comment on the snakes, but I moved from Indy to Jackson, MS not too long ago!   I've really come to like it down here 'near' the bayou!  :D
  • I recently moved to MS and heard from my realtor they come out when it's warmer.  I suggest you go to Home Depot and get the largest snake killer aka shovel you can find.  Get one that has a long handle and a flat end!!!  Make sure your house is sealed, keep doors closed, be careful when weeding your landscaping, moving rocks/firewood, ect.  As far as  them being in your yard just haul butt if you see one.
  • Ok, I've lived in Southern MS/LA my entire life.  We do alot of outdoor activites so we see snakes on a regular basis.  I have never has one in my house.  I have had one during a flood after a tropical storm come in under a flooded door where I worked.

However just do some research and find out which ones are venomous and be familiar. Here's a link that may help you.

  • Okay girl I am from the country and I will tell you it just depends on WHERE you live. If you live in the city, you rarely will see a snake but it DOES happen OCCASIONALLY. If you are moving to a more rural or country area- YOU WILL SEE "EM! Most will be in the yard and on the road - rarely inside. I've seen 4 or 5 inside in my entire life and grew up in the country. Nothing to freak out about- they are just as scared of you as you are them. If you like the water and go out on the boat often you'll see A LOT more of them. Everytime my husband and I go out on the rez i see a snake- he says he never sees them unless he's with me but I ALWAYS see them and i'm terrified of them. But you'll be safe. Be careful in the summer- esp in the yard and just check out whats under your tires. Be careful with potted plants- as a florist I've seen a few curl around the bottom of the plant inside the big pots. But you'll be okay ! I promise!
  • Indifferent  Seriously?  I've never seen one.  Are there more snakes in the south?
