FYI I may DD.
Some of you may know I hate my job. Like I leave home in the morning crying, and come home crying hate it.
My boss is super "Let me act like I'm helping you by being an overbearing, nosey-nell" kind of manager. It's the pits.
I have had a few bites with interviews, but I could tell the "doctors appointment" excuse was getting fishy.
To side step my boss jumping to conclusions as she likes to do, I went into her office real serious like, shut the door, and told her with nervousness in my voice, that all my "doctors appointments" were because my "doctor" did blood work and they found my cholesterol is out of whack, and my blood pressure is a little high. No medicine for now, I just need diet and exercise. But I'll need to go in periodically for blood work, but I'll try not to let it interfere with work.
This works on many levels:
A. I garnered sympathy from her.
B. I told her she was the only one that knew, satisfying the "up in yo' bidness" angle. She looooved that.
C. I now can go on interviews without arrousing suspicion.
I do not like lying, but this place is a world of nuts. I can't even delve into the garbage heap of crazy that goes on here. Most days I'm trying not to cry, scream, or just flat out quit. So I guess I lied to salvage some sanity.
My boss is off my back thus far. She even stopped by my desk at lunch to check what kind of dressing was on my salad to make sure it was low sodium.
No, I'm not kidding.
Re: Evil Genius or horrible person? Your call.
Mwuhaaa...Mwuhhaaa, ha, ha, ha! Evil Genius.
I think you are justified though just from your description of the place and said boss. You could get alot of play out of this one, too. Maybe an extra day off around the holidays?
Uh, yeah. I put in my time off request for the holiday and she said, "You do have a few more vacation days, lets see if you can find a way to take them." This from the lady who says you're letting the "team" down if you take a day off.
Downside: She is now monitoring what I eat. Awww, it's cause she cares....to much.
I'm gonna go with Evil Genius as well...she may be watching your eating habits, but at least you don't have to worry about scheduling interviews. Maybe you'll get away from her sooner!
What do you do at your job? I'm always looking through the jobs in the newspapers, maybe I'll see something for you...
I think what you did was fine. If your job sucks that much, you have to do what you have to do, right?
That is very funny about her checking up on you and your salad dressing..LOL!
i have to agree ... evil genius.
i love the "salad checkup". she's like your BFF now that you confided to her.
Right now I'll take almost anything as long as I don't take a big hit on the salary. Anything admin would be great.
I'm doing meeting planning live/webconference/webcast stuff now. The actual planning, not techincal stuff though.
My nightly ritual has been combing Careerbuilder and Monster. Soooo exciting.
Not sure what your work environment is like, but just a word of caution: with so many workplaces all about FMLA as of late, some are getting stricter about repeated absences linked to a medical condition.
For example, I had to fill out a ton of HR paperwork and become certified with a "serious health condition" the day I told my boss (in secret) I'm pg. Ultimately it's for my protection and that of my benefits, but it was kind disturbing and left me with a "well now I wish I hadn't said anything yet" feeling.
I sympathize with you and wish you the best, and I just don't want to see you stuck in a position where you have to start documenting or filling in the gaps with documentation for "medical visits" or "tests."
Good luck!!
Hah! Evil Genius! You sound like me at my last job. I ended up screaming obscenities, quitting, and still getting a good reference!
I would REALLY caution you though first on possibly having to show proof of medical appointments and/or having to fill out FMLA papers. Also, I would be very careful because you never know who your boss is friends with or related to. She could be the sister of the person you sit down to interview with.
I would ask if you can interview very early in the morning or very late in the evening. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to come in at 6:30 am to do an interview if you explain that you are currently working somewhere.
