Atlanta Nestie with Montgomery question

Hi ladies!! I was told that you all are very nice and helpful :)  I was wondering if I could get any/all information about Montgomery, AL.  DH has a job lead there and while we are happy in Atlanta, this would be an amazing opportunity for him.  I'm hesitant to move from ATL if for no other reason than fear of the unknown. I'll appreciate any information!

 Thanks!

Re: Atlanta Nestie with Montgomery question

  • Hey ISU!!!!

There are a couple girls on here that can give you some info.

I live about 45 min from there.  It will not have all the shopping, things to do, etc. that you are used to in ATL.

However you will NOT have the traffic, taxes, etc. in Montgomery.

Do yall have kids yet?  You'll want to consider schools.  I have friends who work in Montgomery and live in AU just for the schools.

I know others will have more info to give you but I guess since I moved from ATL to here I can compare some.  However I haven't lived in Montgomery, just visited.

  • I live in Montgomery.  I've been here about 6 years now.  It takes getting used to if you are from a larger city.  Shopping wise, there is not a huge mall here, and I usually go to Birmingham if I'm doing major shopping.  We are only 3 hours from the beach, so it's easy to make that a weekend trip.  If you have kids, I would look more in the Prattville/Millbrook area for housing, as Montgomery schools are not that great.  If you would like anymore information, just let me know, I'll be happy to help!

  • I've lived in Alabama all my life. I moved from Dothan to the Montgomery area in 03. I've worked in Montgomery and we live in Prattville which is just north of Montgomery. I would suggest that you look in Millbrook or Prattville as a place to live. If you're really into shopping then Birmingham is really close. Prattville is growing and we have a lot of new shops right here. I have no need to go to Mongtomery for anything, I can find it all here and if necessary, in B'ham. Obviously my preference for a place to live in this area is Prattville. :)  Good luck.
  • We don't have kids, just three dogs, so schools aren't a concern.  I'm more concerned about shopping, having a Target, and having a job.  I'm a paralegal who specializes in patents and trademarks, which is a unique area.  I will be glad to accept any and all advice!!!  What is the COL there? Like here in the ATL area we paid $171k for a 3 bdrm 1700 sq ft townhouse, what are prices like there?

  • Wow, does everyone have a ranch?  I saw like one two story! Is that normal?

Wow, does everyone have a ranch?  I saw like one two story! Is that normal?

Most of the newer neighborhoods have 2 story homes, but the area I live in (which is older) is majority 1 level ranch style homes.  A Montgomery specific realty site to check out is www.alamls.com.

You can search by bedrooms, sq. foot, etc.  I have found that housing in Prattville is cheaper as well.  We'll buy in Prattville in a few years after we have kids.

For jobs, check out the state personnel website.  www.personnel.state.al.us

One huge advantage to the area is that it is the state capital and home to a large Air Force base, so there are a good number of jobs.

  • A friend of mine here in Bham is a civil rights/employment atty - I could ask her for firm recs in Mtgy if she has any.

  • OH ISU -

You will get WAY more for your money here.  If you think it's a possibility list your townhouse NOW.  My condo (as you know) has been on the market in Sandy Springs for almost 2 yrs now.  Hopefully in Kennesaw you will sell faster.

You prob won't have a hard time finding a paralegal position since Montgomery is that capital.

Again, you won't have the taxes you do now, you will have WAY less traffic, and while you might not have all the shops you do there, you'll have a Target and the necessities.  Plus you'll have great nesties, once again!!!

  • I live in East Montgomery.  I have to say though that I do not like living here (nothing against it we just never wanted to be here to begin with so I have always had a bad attitude about it).  However, I agree with the other ladies and I would look more into living in the Millbrook/Prattville area. They have better schools and are generally considered safer.  My SIL is a paralegal here so I would be happy to ask her about paralegal jobs for you.

  • It seems as though everyone has covered the basics. I just want to say that I was born and raised in Montgomery and I have no intentions of EVER moving back! I would totally recommend Pratville, Millbrook, or Wetumpka before Montgomery.
