Anyone feel like an L.A. Christmas just isn't "Christmas?"
I've been here for several years, so it's getting better, but I miss it being COLD on Christmas. My aunt and uncle used to go to the Ritz on the beach in Laguna at Christmastime and I hated it. It's probably just because I'm an east-coast transplant, but the beach is NOT Christmassy (for me.) Anyone else feel that way? Any advice on how to deal? We may drive up to Big Bear on the 25th to play in some snow.

Re: Anyone feel like an L.A. Christmas just isn't "Christmas?"
Oddly, I'm afraid that I'm beginning to feel a bit-humbug myself. But it's only the 4th and I'm hoping for both of us, that we'll rally and enjoy!
Maybe you do need a trip to the mountains...hope it's nice enough for you to go sometime very soon!
I transplated to L.A. from Vegas last year right after Thanksgiving. Last year it didn't feel like Christmas to me and I thought it was just because I was homesick. Now I'm starting to feel that way again this year. Although Vegas isn't the east coast, you can still feel the nippy chill in the air and there was alway snow or little flurries around Christmas.
As somone that is not an east-coast transplant, this is normal to me. I can totally see how you would feel that way though. I've been back east at Christmas time and it is SO different an experience than here.
It's funny, last year we went to Acapulco the week before Christmas and talk about feeling "not christmas like"...that was really strange.
I think a quick trip to Big Bear is definitely in order. Even if you can try and go now...to get you in the mood before Christmas...that would be good.
I totally feel that way and I was born and raised here in LA. Things have especially changed from the way they were when I was younger. I remember when I was growing up the winters seemed colder and it would rain a lot more. Shopping centers would decorate everything with Christmas decorations and lights. I have been seeing this go away more and more over the years.
Big Bear definitely is a nice place to get you back in the Christmas mood. At least in comparison to the rest of LA. Staying up there for a few nights might be in order if you can
I've lived in California, or Hawaii my whole life, so I've never known anything else, but I would love just for once to experience a white christmas. Only I want a driver, because the thought of driving in snow terrifies me.
I keep trying to convince my family we should do a cabin christmas in Big Bear or Mammoth one year, but so far I can't get everybody onboard.
I've felt that way since moving from San Fran to SoCal. Christmas mornings in San Fran are usually foggy and cold, and that's a pretty decent stand-in if you can't have snow.
There's something "colder" --emotionally, I guess-- about stark, bright, empty sunshine on a Christmas morning... especially if you have to drive to someone's house, the empty freeways and bland sunshine are depressing too!
I love the idea of Big Bear for xmas.. I wonder if I could convince DH to do that, since we're not exchanging presents (except for the baby, of course)
