Christmas cookies....what is your tradition?
I don't know if tradition is the right word here.....
Everyone talks about baking Christmas cookies, but what do you do with them?
Growing up, my mom would bake a bunch of cookies and then we would have guests over during the week after Christmas to see the tree and to see what we got for Christmas. My mom would set out a big plate of Christmas cookies at this time. Is that a normal thing to do? I was just thinking that I'm not making any Christmas cookies because we don't get any Christmas visitors. Our families all live away from us.
Just curious as to what others do....
Re: Christmas cookies....what is your tradition?
When I was little my mom would bake sugar cookies, cut them out in Christmas shapes and then we would paint them. We always took them places, like church or to my grandparents'.
I don't bake many myself-just enough for Christmas day. This year though I have decided to bake them and give them away as gifts.
My mom always baked cookies even when we didn't do holidays at her house. We would just have them around to eat as we wanted until they were gone. She may have brought some to my Grandmothers' houses where we had Christmas when we were little, but I doubt it. Both of my Grandmoms made plenty of their own cookies. I think she just make them for us (and Santa!). Once my mom took over and started having Christmases at her house, there was all the more reason for her to bake tons of cookies
I bake some cookies at Christmas, but not to the extent my mom does. Some I give as gifts, some I bring to Christmas at my parents' and in-laws' houses, and some we just eat ourselves. This year we're having people over for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, so I guess I'll be making a lot more cookies!
My grandma bakes sand tarts and gives them to my mom, 2 aunts and me for our families.
I bake 2 kinds of cookies and give them away as gifts...neighbors, friends, DH's family.

We always baked large amounts of cookies and gave them to friends and family in holiday tins.
This year, since I'm far from my mom, I'm doing 1/2 the baking, and she's doing 1/2 the baking. Then we'll celebrate Christmas the weekend BEFORE the holiday (I hate traveling in the traffic) and we'll exchange our cookies. Then, I'll give some of the combined (my cookies and mom's cookies) to friends, bring a tin into work, send a tin with DH, etc.
My mom and I always baked a ton of cookies together. It was so much fun. We usually try to make some now right when I get up to PA for the holidays, but we each make some ahead of time too. My family except for me loves pecan crescents so we always make those. Also sugar cakes and sand tarts are favorites. Recently I've really like making gingerbread cookies and mollasses cookies.
Old favorites are chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and peanut butter blossoms.
We usually bake zucchini bread and Dutch honey bread as well as pies.
We take cookies when we go to see people and on Christmas day.

My mom, sister, and I usually make cookies the second weekend of December, although it looks like this year my sister won't be able to make it. We make 6-7 different kinds, split them up and then have them through Christmas. I give some to coworkers, send some with DH to work, take them to parties, and just have them around to enjoy.
?
That's why my mom made them, for company (and my dad, who has a sweet tooth). Since she passed away, my sisters and I bake different kinds of cookies to take to my dad's, since that's where we all spend Christmas. I take some to my in-laws, maybe I'll take some into work, and I leave some here, because we are here the week after Christmas and may have company.
I also make fruitcakes (don't laugh, they're tasty!). I give 2 to my dad, one to my aunt, keep one here, and use the last one for the cookie tray for work and the in-laws, and the rest stays here.
