Need recs for a Digital SLR...

DH wants to buy me a digital SLR, which I've wanted forever, and now I need recs!!  Anyone......Chris?  Recio?

Re: Need recs for a Digital SLR...

  • I love my Nikon D80.  It has all the features that I want/need and was in my budget.  It's important to go to a camera store and get the feel of different cameras.  Some will feel comfortable to hold, others, not so much.  It's also very important to get a great lens.  Don't waste your money on getting an awesome camera body and then put a cheap piece of glass on it.  It depends on your budget as well.  Are you looking for something more professional or more pro-consumer?  Colonial Photo & Hobby has very knowledgeable sales reps that can help.  Harmon Photo is also good but I have found them to be more expensive.  GL and have fun!
  • i agree it definitely depends on budget and what you plan to use it for. I have a Nikon D40, but in retrospect i kinda wish i had gotten one with higher megapixels (at least the D40x) since I am now shifting focus from "hobby photographer" to "semi-pro"....  but I do love everything Nikon, so you can't go wrong there (very user-friendly IMO)

  • Thank you!  I'm just a hobby photographer with no interest in going pro - teaching keeps me plenty busy!  I THINK Chris also  has a Nikon D40 - I've heard good things about that one.
  • I have the Olympus E-510 and it's great for a hobby photographer, and extremely affordable (mine was $550 through Adorama Camera and came with two lenses and two lens hoods). I love the live view feature, which helps if you're used to a digital point and shoot that has an LCD screen (I believe the newer Nikons and the Canon Digital Rebel XSi also have the live preview LCD screens though). HTH!
  • My oldest daughter is into photography as is my dad.  We bought her a Nikon D40 for her birthday and she LOVES it.  Even my dad who has owned very nice/expensive cameras thought hers was great and now he wants one for Christmas.  DD has not had a problem with megapixals, but it is lower (6.2 I think).  You can go to a D60 or D80, but you are also increasing the price significantly. Unless you are doing some semi-prof work, I don't believe it is necessary.  If you shop around, you should be able to get a package, including the 55-200 lens for about  $550.  They are easy to use, and smaller than the Canon or Olympus (my dad has a Canon).  The only downside to the D40 which we have found so far is you have to look through the viewfinder to take the picture - you cannot use the screen.  hth!

  • I love my Canon Rebel - easy to use and it had the right feel in my hands. I tried both, but this one just "felt" better. I totally recommend going to a good camera store and holding all cameras. See how they feel, what they weigh, what it's like to use them. Then you'll find the one that's right for you.?
