What are some must do Christmas events in the Portland/Tigard/ Lake O/ Beaverton areas? Specifically on the 23rd and 24th.
Also, can you recommend a non-denominational Christmas Eve service that is not too sermon-heavy? My family will be visiting and a big group would like to attend a Christmas-Eve service. Most of them are non-denominational Christians plus some agnostics so something middle of the road and not too boring I guess.
Thanks for any suggestions!
Re: Christmas Events
My favorite thing to do during Christmas is to go to the Michael Allen Harrison Christmas concert at the Old Church. We go every Christmas Eve, and have gone for the past 8 years. He is an extremely talented Portland piano player, but has a whole host of other musicians who play with him in the concert at this beautiful Old Chuch in downtown. I look forward to it every year, and there is many other nights that they play other than Christmas Eve (although I believe there is more than one show on that night). Just google Michael Allen Harrison if you're interested.
Also, I love going and driving/walking (weather permitting) down Peacock Lane in Portland, a street where every single house has amazing lighting displays.
Peacock Lane is a good one. It's between SE Belmont and SE Stark at about 41st Ave.
The Grotto also tends to be really popular. I don't know their hours but it's located out in east Portland. I'm sure googling it would provide plenty of info.
The Nutcracker has been a long time favorite in my family. They do both matinees and night time shows.
Zoo Lights is super fun too. It's held at the Oregon Zoo and I think runs most evenings.
Portland Center Stage is putting on A Christmas Carol.
I've heard good things about the holiday tea at the Heathman but I've never been.
That's all I can think of for now.
Ditto the Michael Allen Harrison concert. On Sat. December 13th he's doing a benefit concert for DoveLewis. The tickets are only $1.50 more than the regular concert and include a dessert reception, as well as benefitting DoveLewis!
Zoolights is really fun, especially if you have kids. We don't have kids, and we go every year. We always go to the giftshop and buy an ornament, too, so it's become a little tradition.
Peacock Lane is fun, but I haven't been for years. I remember it being very crowded, so maybe try going on a weeknight. The Grotto is beautiful as well. Even if you're not very religious, it's just a nice place to go and reflect, look at the lights, here some holiday performances, etc. The Nutcracker is a great event, too. Also, Chris Botti, a local trumpet player will be doing a holiday concert for two days (Dec. 19-20) in Portland this year. I've never been to it but my family is going this year. I listened to his Christmas album and it was good, so it should be a good show.
Have fun! I love Christmas in Portland!
