Did anyone call in gay?

Today is call in gay day.  Anyone participate?  I didn't.  It's only my 3rd week on the job and I just don't feel that would have been appropriate. If it was my old job and I'd been there 2 years I would have called in.

Re: Did anyone call in gay?

  • i havent even heard about it?  whats the concept?

at first blush it seems almost offensive - being gay isnt an illness - but i'm sure there is more to it

  • no. i wasn't planning on it, either. i have time sensitive projects, and personally i don't really think it's an effective protest. plus, honestly, it would eat up 8 hours of my leave and i'm already taking off on friday to finish some school stuff that i have to get in before monday.

i agree, i'm not thrilled about the name. from what i understand it's supposed to be a full-on economic boycott to emphasize the impact gays and lesbians have on the economy and what would happen if we weren't a part of it as employees or as consumers. calling off gay was only part of it.

  • No, I think these things are silly.  I think my boss would basically say WTF if I called in Stick out tongue And I need to keep my time off for when I need it. So, no, I am here - but obviously not working too hard. Wink

  • I am at work too.  I didn't know about it but wouldn't have done it anyway.  I don't think it really has an impact but also it is more of a pain to be out for me.  I have to figure out a plan make copies write the plan out and then pick up the pieces when I get back.  I would rather work than make sub plans anyday.

  • Nope I'm working today. I dont really dig the whole idea of it. My employer supports me and my family in ever way possible why would i want to screw them over.
  • As proven by "day without a Mexican" these boycott days don't work. I think it will be interesting to see who participated and if it even hits the news.

  • Neither of us called in "Gay" either. So few people pay attention to what's going on in the news that the chances of an actual impact were pretty slim. Besides, what's the point? In this bad economic climate, why put your job in danger? It's better to be EMPLOYED and fighting for more rights than not..right?

But I didn't work very hard...does that count? ha ha!

  • nope. in fact, i think my office would be upset b/c they're uber supportive.
  • I'm off today anyway

  • I would only be making a statement to the parents whose kids I watch - and we are friendly with them, so it would have been pointless.

I wasn't too enthusiastic about it anyway because it wasn't very well organized.  The only way that this would have any hope of making a large statement would have been for it to be well planned and publicized.

  • NO--that definitely wouldn't have gone over well. I did hear about it--and chose not to do some errand running today. But, I will go out and spend all that money tomorrow, so I am not sure if it matters. But, if the companies happen to look, it would be nice if this Wednesdays sales were a little lower than usual.
