Grrr...so frustrated with an employee

So, one of my newer employees, hired in January is not happy because he's not eligible for the entire 100% of his merit increase. And he is also not happy because his annual review and next chance for a merit increase is not until September. Now, he is emailing all of this to me while he is off on vaction from Dec. 5 until Jan. 2....yes, his first year on the job he gets all that time off and I let him off for a week in March for his honeymoon because he made me aware of it when he interviewed. Does he know that people are losing their jobs every day in this economy? Does he know only 20% of Americans will even get a raise this year? The six states that we are a part of only had a 4% increase this year...and he wants more money? I am so mad right now I could explode...

Re: Grrr...so frustrated with an employee

  • There are always these employees in your workplace.  We have them too.  I agree with you.  I am just thankful I have a job!  I would reply to him with those stats about 20% of americans getting raises and so forth.  I would also inform him if he is not satisfied with his current salary he could look elsewhere for a job b/c there are PLENTY of good workers that would be proud to take his position.
  • and yall work for non-profit, how rich (no pun intended, ok maybe a little).  I'm sorry, but for someone like me that won't be getting a raise, her DH won't, is glad she has one but doesn't like it and has 2 mortgages he's a spoiled brat.  I'm sorry to be like that b/c that's insensitive but you're right, w/the economy we're in we are all lucky right now.

I think I'd ignore him but take note of it for his review.

amen Nicole, and Heather you can hire me.  I'd be a WONDERFUL employee!!!!!

  • Its hard for me to hear people complaining like this guy b/c I have freinds all around me that are struggling.  My best freind DH lost his job this week and they hadn't bought christmas presents yet.  They have 2 small kids.  So she is stressing over how to handle "Santa" gifts so the kids aren't dissapointed.
  • I am thinking the same thing, I would love to have all that time off for Christmas and two weeks off in March. Fire him!!!!!! Just kidding, but I would tell him the stats you quoted to us.
  • I can't believe he is complaining while having a whole month off of work!  I am REALLY needing a day off next week seeing I will loose 11 vacation days and 10 sick days at the end of the year, but feel terrible about asking off.  I even told my boss I would understand if I didn't get my bonus this year, he gave it to me anyway.  I am just so thankful to have a job right now in a industry that is really struggling.  Your employee should be too, especially in non profit.  I don't think he even understands how he is coming off.
  • He's an idiot. I'd definitely mention the things you mentioned here in addressing his "concerns".
  • I need a job I wish I lived in Auburn, I'd take his job. I hate calling in sick or taking off. (Just the way I was raised I guess)

ME too, even if I am really sick.  I feel sooo bad and worry about them at work if I do take a day!

  • I do need a job and I do live in Auburn! And I even have a PR degree. Hire me and I won't act like that, I promise!

  • I am glad to know that I am not being unfair or unreasonable. I talked to my boss about it, and she said she feels the same way. That everyone else with our company has had to go by our review schedule.

The job isn't in Auburn, it's actually 2 hours away in Dothan...or I would so be head hunting around for some stellar Auburn PR employees. I actually tried when the job was open but unless someone has no ties any place else Dothan's not really a sought after city to relocate to.

Heather, what happened to your job!?!?!  I thought you were at AU!?!?!?

  • I am but I'm still only working in a temp position. The position that I'm working now was just posted in a permanent capacity. My boss kept telling me to apply and that she wants me for it and all but of course anything can happen...I'm hoping to get a call about an interview tomorrow or Friday though!

I'm crossing my fingers for you and thinking about you.  I hope it all works out!!!!  Good luck, I know you'll do great.

That's awesome that your boss is encouraging you to apply!!!  Go for it!!!!

    Keep us posted!!!

  • Good luck girl! Hope it works out!
  • Thanks ladies. It would be a great job to have. Not exactly what I thought I wanted (not PR at all) but it would be in Communications for Enrollment Services so a good job, a stable job and a lot of room to move up.

That's awesome.  You'll have the inside track being TES.  That's how half of my department got their jobs!
