Snow

Yes SNOW in New Orleans. I am watching it fall out my window as I type.

Maybe he!! is freezing over!!!

Re: Snow

  • lol.  Watch out on the road.  I hear Southern drivers go berserk with just a little snow.
  • OMG, yay!!  Ditto Marquis, be careful!

Only rain here in VA.  Boo!

  • We've got at least a foot already here.

Ok, maybe not quite a foot, but it feels like it.

  • It is 8:00 am, 38 degrees and clear with a high of 67.  Sun all day Big Smile

Ok, maybe not quite a foot, but it feels like it.

We've had 17 inches already this year, which is more than this time last year. Last year was Milwaukee's 2nd largest snowfall. We're hoping it tapers off.

See, and CA is nice and all, but I think I'd be really sad without a cold winter.  Being in Orlando made me wonder how you could ever get excited for Christmas when it's 75 degrees and humid.

The converse is also true, though. I find it very difficult to get excited about Christmas when it's been 3 straight weeks of a high of 4 and it's practically too cold to leave the house.

Of course we go beserk. We live in the south for a reason - not to deal with snow!!!  It is a darn winter wonderland outside right now.

I am worried about DS. He is at school on the opposite side of the city -about 12 miles away with plenty of overpasses & bridges between us and most of them closed.

So far his school is still opened but many are starting to close now. They say by this afternoon it should start to melt but they keep pushing the time back for when that will happen. I've talked to him a couple of times so far and told him NOT to drive until the road conditions are safe. But I am talking to a hard-headed teenager!

  • Well, maybe that's a bit extreme, Elizabeth.  It was 60 here yesterday, though.  That's just wrong.  A little 20-30 never hurt anyone, though!

  • And to add to just how rare this is for us - all local programming has been pre-empted so we have constant local news on this freak snowfall.

Not only is it rare. Today's snowfall is the earliest on record here in the city.

We did have snow Christmas day 2004. But not quite this much maybe. Of course talk about weather here in the city leads to more talk about bad weather. Snow in 2004 - worst hurricane season 2005!  You know the news has to plug the negative of all this as well.

  • If it makes you feel better, the local news even freaks out up here. We got around 3-4 inches the other day, and the first half of the local news was all about the snowfall. They interviewed mall employees who said that the snow had not seemed to really affect their business. They were reporting on the lack of traffic accidents. It was ridiculous. We got 15 minutes of snow coverage before a single mention of Blagojevich's arrest. WTF?

Last year, we had 2 huge storms that closed everything, so they were newsworthy. But this year? It snows 4 inches and the newscasters start going nuts. It's WISCONSIN, FFS.  Plow the roads and move along. At least y'all have a better excuse for going nuts.

Where I grew up it would snow 1 or 2 times a year (always February) and the roads around the school were like a war zone; spin outs, accidents, cars in gutters and ditches - and that was mostly the parents.  So him not driving would be a good idea.

It does get cold at night here - some places more than others - but the lack of cloud cover lets it warm up during the day.  I like the snow; I visit it in Tahoe at least once a year and it's lovely.

Not extreme. That's a typical MN winter. At least the last couple years. Where I grew up, we had at least 1-2 days per year where school was cancelled because of the cold.

I didn't mean extreme like you were exaggerating!  I meant extreme like MN needs to relax and get less cold. Big Smile

School canceled because of the cold is HARD CORE bad weather.  Time to move to CA.

I've heard countless people use the extremely cold winters as "proof" that global warming is a hoax. I mean, I honestly kinda get the arguments against global warming (climate change, whatever), even though I disagree, but if you're going to argue against it, you've gotta come up with something better than "well, last winter was really cold."

Mr.P - It gets better. Every once in a while, the governor cancels school for the whole state because the whole state is too cold. I lived for those days when I was a kid.

Every time I've said, "I'm cold," over the last two days, my husband's response has been: "San Diego."

  • In the Pacific NW, it usually doesn't snow much unless you're like over 1000 ft. My ILs are, so every winter we can go up to their place for a winter wonder land. They got like 13 inches last year. Every few years it will snow everywhere for like a week. That happened my sophomore year of high school, school was cancelled and we were trapped in our (long country) drive way, and I swear I went insane til my friend's dad came to rescue me in his big 4WD SUV and I spent the last 3 days of the snow time with her.
  • Aww, I say enjoy the snow!

This South Florida gal has never in her life experienced a white Christmas. Okay, a white ANYTHING unless she's gone on vacation ;)

Now if we get some snow here at some point (aside from that one time in 1977 people still talk about) THEN hell will have frozen over, lol!

  • I like snow, but I'd gladly trade snow for milder winters. I grew up in Florida, and I loved being able to wear shorts and flip flops on Christmas. Summers are unbearable down there though.

I've never had a white Christmas, either!  Last year was my first Christmas not spent in Texas. It was at the ILs, who live about 40 miles south of Chicago. We had snow something like 2 or 3 days before, but it all blew - not melted, but blew - away by Christmas Day. We're driving from the ILs to Texas on Christmas Day - does it count if there's snow on the ground when we leave at 5:00 Christmas morning?

  • I saw that Houston storm go your way on Today this morning and wondered if you'd get some!

Ditto Mr.P, snow is very nice. For visiting. It's cold enough for me here to feel Christmasy. It's been in the 30s overnight, and growing up in CA, that feels like a huge difference from 70.

I am freaking out about the rain in SF this weekend though. I have like no shoes that are appropriate for shopping all day, and the only pair I do have are not high enough to keep my pants out of the puddles. Actually I don't know what kind of shoe could be appropriate for walking 10 hours and keeping my pants dry. Boo.

knee-high boots over skinny jeans/pants or with a knee-length or shorter skirt or dress.  I hate wet hems.

Oh Marquis the fashion goddess, I should have known you'd have a solution. Of course, I don't think I own any of this, but I will see what I can do, this is a good start.

  • I cannot imagine living somewhere that it gets cold enough to snow. I am a super wuss.

Tell your son to hang out around school untill its safe!!!!!

I love CA. The weather we have now is perfect. About 70 during the day with clear skys and in the upper 40's at night. Winter perfection.
