Anyone taken the MAT or GRE

I'm thinking baout getting my 5th year degree. I could go to UNA and do it all there. The only thing is that I have to take one of them which is why I am hesitant. (I freak out on timed tests.) Anyone have any advise?

Re: Anyone taken the MAT or GRE

  • I took the GRE.  I was freaking out before I took it as well.  My brother told me to get a study guide from Books A Million and so that is what I did.  I got the score I needed so I guess that worked :)

Are you wanting to teach 7-12th grade?  I know UNA has that program but they don't do 5th year for the elementary grades.  But if you were wanting to do the elementary grades A&M has 5th year.

Good luck!  Teaching is a very rewarding career Smile

  • My mother did the MAT...I think it was easier for her having been out of school for so long.
  • Also just a word of warning.  The vocab on the GRE was pretty difficult.  Lots of harder type words.  So if you choose to take the GRE it is important that you study.

I also forgot to mention I had a friend who took the MAT and she said it was pretty easy because it was all analogies.  Now I am not good with analogies so that's why I didn't choose that one, but if you are good with them then she said it was pretty easy.

  • If I go to UNA they only offer the MAT. So that's whay I would be taking. I need to look into A&M b/c I would love love love to teach little kids. I should have done that in the first place but I was a dumb kid not knowing what I wanted. lol

Where do you teach? I know I've asked before but I can't remember!

  • I teach at a private school in Madison (don't want to say for privacy reasons :) ) but it's a larger private school that I'm sure you have heard of since you live around this area.  I love the private sector because I have to deal with a lot less BS...but I student taught at Heritage Elementary in Madison.

I am currently in grad school getting my masters, and then I am possibly thinking I might go and get my EdS so I can become a reading coach.  Reading is my fave subject to teach.

When did UNA only start accepting the MAT?  I am there now and I took the GRE?  Or is it that the 5th year only takes the MAT?  Or did they change it?  I have been in for almost 2 years so it might have changed.

  • I am doing a 5th year program, but it is in the Bham area. I took both the GRE and the MAT. The GRE was awful for me, so I then took the MAT. I passed the first time with just a little studying from a study guide. It was SO much better, because the main task is to figure out the relationship in the question-even if you don't know the words.

(for instance a is to b as c is to d-other times they would switch is to d is to c as b is to a, if that makes sense.)

Also, just FYI the amalogies are about all subjects. Their wwebsite has pracrice tests for free. Taking one could help you feel more comfortable or get an idea of what they ask. Alsol, I bought a study book and it made me feel better :)

  • It may be just 5th year or I could have read it wrong. DH is in Madison and loves it so I would like to be there too. He coaches and I would love to as well! Does A&M offer online classes. UNA does that's why I am leaning toward them.

I looked over the MAT website and I saw the MAT would be much easier for me than the GRE. Cross your fingers that I can work this out!

  • Oh and as for it being what you should have done from the start but you didn't know what you wanted to do I totally understand.  It took me a little longer to get out of undergrad because I figured that out my junior year and so I changed my major and took a little bit longer.  And my brother went and got a CIS degree knowing all along he should have gotten an education degree because he wanted to coach.  He worked CIS for 2 years and then headed back to do his 5th year and now coaches HS football and teaches technology classes and computer classes.  So it happens to lots of people :)  It's kinda hard to know what you want to do sometimes.

Then you could probably figure out where I teach as well :)

I love Madison.  Right now we live in East Limestone but in a couple of years we are selling this house and I want to move into Madison.  I was raised in Decatur and I always loved the Madison/Huntsville area.

Erin my brother went to A&M for his 5th year and he did most of his either online or at night because he was working during the day.  But you live out in West Limestone right?  So if you choose to do 7-12th it would be a lot closer to go to UNA if you had to go to campus for anything.  But of course if you want to do elementary then your only choice up here is A&M.  The next closest university that does elementary is I believe Montevallo.  And of course that isn't close to up here lol.

  • I took the GRE.  5 times.  I am a TERRIBLE test taker.

The MAT was never an option for me, and I'm not comfortable with analogies, so I wouldn't have taken that anyway.  I did one of the courses at Kaplan, and my score actually went down.

The best score I got was my 5th time.  When you register for the GRE, they send you a CD with practice tests, and I did those.

Study, study, study for the GRE.  If you want, I am more than happy to send you all my Kaplan study materials (a big book and flashcards for vocab words).  I'm never going to use it again, and I'm happy to pass it along.

  • I know you mentioned that you will most likely take the MAT over the GRE, but if you do happen to take the GRE I just wanted to recommend a book that I used to study. It's the Princeton Review's series on GRE prep. I don't remember the actual title of the one I used, but it's the basic GRE prep and has lots of practice questions, essay prep and includes a link to their website to utilize their online resources (including practice tests). It tells you exactly what to expect on test day, etc. I really liked it because it was written in plain 'ol english - almost like a conversation. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

  • I took the MAT and it wasn't too bad. I didn't want to do the GRE because I have no math skills, LOL.
