Hospital Tours...

So I know this isn't a baby board but a lot of you have babies, so I thought I would ask.

For those of you who toured multiple hospitals, what kind of questions did you ask or things did you factor in when making your decision about where to deliver your baby? We are touring 3 hospitals within the next week (St. John's, Missouri Baptist, and St. Luke's). My doctor's office told me their preference, and I have a lot of friends that have told me about where they delivered, but DH and I still want to tour all 3 that my Dr. delivers at so we can come to our own decision. I do like hearing from others about their experiences or what helped them to decide though, so I thought I would ask. :)

 Thanks!
Kim

Re: Hospital Tours...

  • We toured St Lukes and Mo Bap.  I never once left my room so in the end it really didn't matter.  And DH didn't spend the night with me, so the chair/bed option wasn't a big deal either.  We did go with St Lukes because they were a bit smaller - that was really the only reason we choose them.
  • I delivered both times at St. Luke's and couldn't imagine having a better experience anywhere else. With my first daughter, I delivered there because I had previously worked there and had an awesome experience and the second time, I chose to deliver there because I had such a great experience the first time. My SIL delivered at MoBap and had a good experience as well. I have heard mixed things about St. John's...some people love it and some people hate it because they felt like they were just another patient and did not have relationship with their nurse or health care personnel. Some people like to call it the baby factory, but maybe that's because they know what they are doing, not sure since I never delivered there. Good luck!

  • I delivered at St. John's and will again for this baby.  I based my decision on the facts that it is where my doctor prefers to deliver babies, it has the best NICU (just in case), and I heard many good things about the place.  I was hesitant as PP mentioned about it being a "baby factory", but I LOVED my experience there.  They were very attentive the whole time, I was comfortable all around, and we received good care.  I don't have any complaints!  We didn't tour any hospitals for no reason in particular.  Maybe I just thought it would be too time consuming.  I think you'll be happy with any of those hospitals.  I don't think I've heard any bad stories about any of them.
  • We looked at MoBap and St.Joes.  We really didn't have any questions that they didn't answer.  We chose St. Joe's for several reasons.  First, they have LDRP (in one room from check in until check out), it was MUCH quieter and personable (MoBap seemed like they wanted you to have a baby and send you on your way), just liked the feel of St. Joe's better.  I have a wonderful experience and can't wait to see what they do at St. Clairs (St. Clair's is replacing St. Joe's in the Spring).
  • I just delivered at Mo Bap.  I had a great expierence there.  The only downfall about Mo Bap was the PP (post-partum) rooms. Some of them are tiny!  I'd hoped it would encourage visitors to move along.  (Like the in-laws Stick out tongue, yeah only my fam got that hint). So, that kind of stunk. I honestly didn't mind moving. They didn't rush me at all. I think I hung out in the LDR for like 3 hours after I delivered. They didn't rush me at all. I have to rave about the nursing staff. I didn't have one single nurse I disliked.  They were amazing!  Also, they don't have techs.  The nurses are the ones doing everything for you and baby. They were great!
