Need help - Christmas present idea

We are buying some books for my in-laws (they're big readers) for Christmas and having them shipped to their house in Australia. We have two books for my FIL and I want to find something for my MIL.

She likes reading books based on history or people - interesting stories, but based on real events and people.

Can anyone recommend a good book or two? I thought about Barack Obama's book 'The Audacity of Hope' but wasn't sure if that was the way to go.

Any suggestions? She's a hard lady to shop for.

Re: Need help - Christmas present idea

  • Oooh, I can help :) DH loves those kinds of books :)

    Here's a few he likes-

Obama's other book-Dreams of My Father. The Audacity of Hope is about his political ideas, but Dreams is about his childhood and it reads more like a novel. He's actually a very good writer. :)

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.  It could be a little out there. It is about a vampire-but , it's based on real events and the man who really inspired the story of Dracula-a prince in Romania. So it's obvious got a fantasy element, but she bases it in a real time period and place.

The Plot Against America-it's a historical fiction that imagines what would have happened in the US and with WWII if Lindbergh had won the Presidency in 1940 instead of FDR.

I could name some others but DH tends to read nonfiction, and I don't know if that would be what you mean...a lot of it is US history.

  • I don't know if this is something you might be interested in but..

The Other Boleyn Girl was really good...based on Anne Boleyn and Mary Boleyn and King Henry the VIII.

  • Thanks guys! I'll look in to some of these.
