Anyone a State of WI employee?

I am anticipating a job offer from a State of WI department and am 14 weeks pregnant.  If I take the job I would be due about 5months after I start. I wouldn't be covered under FMLA (kicks in at 1 year) or disability (kicks in at 6 months).  I would basically just ask for the minimum time needed to recover (unpaid) and I think a doctor would recommend 6 weeks.  Anyone know how this would fly with the State?  I know they have to treat me like any other employee with a temporary disability.  I am just not sure what their rules are for employees with disabilities. I would attempt to arrage this when and if I get the offer.

Re: Anyone a State of WI employee?

  • I was almost in the exact same situtation as you in March of '07. I was 12 weeks pregnant and starting with UWC. It was past the 6 month probationary period by the time I had the baby so I don't think they could've let me go even if they wanted to. My supervisor was awesome though so I had no problems whatsoever! The minimum time you can take off is 6 weeks vaginal and 8 weeks?cesarean. If you want more time though, I don't think they would deny you. You are allowed up to 6 months with the state. I took 11 weeks. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I have a friend that works for OSER and she answered all of my questions when I was going through the same thing!

  • I work for DCF.  I can ask my supervisor on Monday, but I believe that they would be fair to you and allow a minimum of six weeks off.  You can use up to six weeks of sick time, and you begin accumulating that immediately, so it wouldn't need to be all unpaid.  Plus, you can take vacation as well, which also kicks in immediately, you will automatically get several weeks, depending on your union, beginning in the new year.  You should be all good!  Good luck and congrats!
