Are my pork chops still good?

So I was without power for about 30 hours on Friday morning our frozen foods were starting to get soft (we have an oldish fridge that doesn't have the best seal - was like cooler temp in the fridge and a little colder in the freezer).  In our freezer we had:

Frozen Pork Chops

Frozen cooked shrimp

Cooked breakfast sausages

WEDDING CAKE

Bagged Vegetables

Frozen dinners

Anyone know what is good and what will poison me if I try to eat it?

Oh yeah, what about the milk and cheese in my fridge???

Thanks!!

Re: Are my pork chops still good?

  • If it were me, I'd probably toss it all. ?Were the meats still at all frozen? ?If so, you might be able to get away with using them right away but they can't be refrozen.

  • Thanks! Meat all defrosted and then refroze (we were out when the power came back on).  Will probably toss it - wanted to confirm I wasn't being unnecessarily wasteful.
  • Just noticed this on WMUR.com

  • I had to toss just about everything in my fridge/freezer...except for maybe my frozen bagels, but everything had to go...all of it thawed out, even my steak tips - waaaaa!!!! :( I didn't think to bring them to my BILs
  • I consider myself pretty lucky. We got our power back relatively quickly so I didn't lose anything...I would have been pissed- I have a stand freezer as well as my regular fridge/freezer combo so I have a few hundred dollars in meat alone in my house at any given time.

I'm actually holding two bags of Mrs.DeputyChief's freezer contents in my stand freezer on top of my own stuff!

  • Ugh, what a waste. I would also toss it all. Except the cake. I would eat the cake :)
  • Well that's just sucky - as if losing power weren't bad enough. And it's not like you could have taken everything and put it out in the snow (as we've done for previous storms). Sorry =(

  • Thanks for the article - it was very helpful. I still count myself among the lucky - a little food loss is nothing compared to what I saw driving around.

    Stay safe everyone!
