I saw your reply below about brushing Haley's teeth. She actually has 6 of them now. I know, it's crazy. Not to sound like an idiot, but how do we go about brushing them? Do we use any kind of children's toothpaste or just one of those fingertip brushes with water? Thanks :)

Re: **Ellen**

  • No paste needed.  When you decide to start using a paste, use one that is for babies and has no fluoride until she is old enough to NOT swallow the toothpaste.  She gets all of the systemic (injested) fluoride she needs through city water supply.

You can use one of the many infant type brushes or just a plain wet wash cloth to wipe her teeth.

Our office, and the American Pediatrics Association, recommend the first dental visit at the age of One.  This is for a very simple exam that last maybe a minute.  We look around quickly and wipe the teeth with a gauze pad.  Mostly the exam is to make sure there are no obvious problems.  The next visit would be the same quick exam at age 2 and then we would attempt a real cleaning at age 3.

  • Great, thanks for all of the information.
