The Knot At Its End?

By Megan, 5:30 PM on Tue Dec 16 2008, 2,563 views

imageSilicon Alley Insider reports that wedding planning/propaganda website The Knot might be closing. Reportedly, Macy's may not renew its registry contract, and the site is bleeding staff and looking for skilled interns. [Silicon Alley Insider]

The Knot Imploding -- Tipster (KNOT)

    Henry Blodget | December 16, 2008 4:37 PM

weddingdisaster.jpgWe got the following anonymous note about The Knot (KNOT), which, truth be told, is a company we hadn't thought about in a few days.  We have no idea whether it's true.  Anyone at the company care to weigh in?

The Knot Inc. is tanking. Brain Drain - newly hired executive team touted six months ago already leaving for greener pastures after just six months. Janet Scardeno president and chief marketing officer left in September after just 6 mos. Salley Jones VP editorial director of online left in October. Lower level editors being let go and not replaced. See media bistro job ads -- knot looking for "interns" for skilled jobs such as photo editors with no experience, no pay.

Founders David Lui and wife Carley Roney dumping stock. Public record.

Operations stuck in a mire. Content entry system not updated since initial launch 12 years ago. Wedding channel acquisition never properly intigrated. Macy's registries down 60%. Macy's has already said they will not re-sign when contract ends in 2010.

Lui shopping for takeover but books show very little savings to be had.

    Company primed for hostile takeover.

The "tanking" description seems a bit shrill, although we would like to know why Janet and Salley left. Also, revenue has flatlined this year--even before the recession--which isn't a great sign.

The company generated about $100 million of revenue last year with a 15% operating margin, so it's hardly a bad business. It's still trading at about 18X last year's operating income, though, which could make a big takeover premium tough, especially in this environment.  The best plan is probably to stabilize management and ride out the storm.

  • I actually pay for advertising on the Knot for my stationery business. For the past 3.5 years, it had been pretty good to me; I could count on at least 2-3clients a month, which more than paid for the ad. This last year it's been really bad and I'd been thinking about cancelling my ad. $125 a month ads up, especially when it doesn't work!

I am a little embarassed to admit that I'd ben devastated if the Nest were to go away. Embarrassed

  • I wonder if they would consider charging membership.  I always thought it was pretty amazing that they ran this site without doing so.  Would anyone consider paying for a membership?
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
  • I probably wouldn't be willing to pay when there are so many other free chat boards out there.

I've given up The Knot/Nest before (it can be done!!) and only got reinterested when I discovered the E08 board.  What I would miss is the nice variety of boards and the wealth of information available.  When I had pg questions, I posted on BOTB.  When I have cooking questions, I post on the cooking board.  When I have beauty products questions, I post on the beauty board.  And the amazing thing, I usually get good advice.  That's amazing, really.

And then of course, there was/is E08, which is full of (mostly) intelligent individuals exchanging really good information.  Being able to discuss topics more substantive than hair gel and the ideal temperature for a flan has really been enjoyable for me.

The only other board I've found that comes close to this is iVillage, but that lacks the personal feel, at least for me.

  • I would be very sad, there is facebook and sparkpeople but not everyone is on there and it wouldn't be the same at all.

  • Aw man. Get it together, Nest/Knot!

That's what Yahoo! groups and other similar listserves/message boards are for. It would be possible to form one for the remnants of E08, if it went away and someone took the initiative.

I would, if it came down to it. I hope they at least give us some notice if they shut down.

Well, that's the thing. It's not just E08 that I come here for. I've also got my local board, WC, TiP, MM and 9-5. I love all these boards and it would be difficult to recreate all of them.

Even with this board, we've got a healthy following on FB, but it's missing some key people (key in my eyes!).

  • Oh no! Someone already set up an MSN board, right? Back in the days of the troll wars? That could be our backup.

Does anyone find this line in the article odd?  I have never heard of David Lui, but Roney is all over Knot stuff.  She authored the knot wedding planning books (I got them for an engagement gift), and I've seen her in the Nest magazine and stuff.

I find it interesting that it's written this way, and not "Founders Carley Roney and husband David Lui."

Sexism is alive and well everywhere, I guess.

In any event, if the boards collapse, we will definitely have to relocate to the MSN board.
