help me justify this

Or not. ?Help me argue against it if you prefer.

I've already gotten my xmas/bday gifts for H (the dates are only a couple days apart). ?I didn't want to get a lot of stuff b/c, well, he's not living at home.

So, just a couple days ago, after I'd made the bigger purchases already, he told me he wanted stuff to decorate his walls. ?I was just going to get him a couple art posters and leave it at that. ?He loves bright colors, so I couldn't go wrong with some Kandinsky (for comparison, that would bring me to about $50). ?

Well, stumbling on customizable cut-out wall clings on my favorite picture ordering site gave me new ideas. ?While I don't think a life size wall cling of me scantily clad for $80 is a good idea (well, it is, but not for that money! especially when he will have a roommate for a few of the months), I thought maybe I should order some blowups (pictures, not the dolls, pervs) and posters of the bright pictures from all our travels together over the last few years.

"Yay, great idea, Sibil. ?A few personal posters will be nice." ?Yeah, I thought so, too, but ?I'm up to like 30 of them and $170, and I can't cut back anymore than I already have. ?I got really nostalgic as I was picking them out. ?Tell me it's still worth it, that he has months in a desert war-zone and it's a totally legit expenditure to bring color and family into his home. ?Or tell me to make the tough cuts and get rid of some of my beautiful, colorful photography. ?I know I CAN afford it, but I know I SHOULDN'T spend that much with the budget stretching really really thin when I start paying tuition in a month, but I know he'd love every penny spent on the surprise, so I'm stuck.

Re: help me justify this

  • Does he have room for 30 posters?  I think that is a really sweet idea by the way.

  • I'm getting them in all different sizes, 8x10; 11x14; 12x18; 16x20 and 20x30. ?He probably won't have room for all of them at one time, but a few extra was the idea so that he could switch them out as his mood and needs changed.

It's hard to find sexy pictures when you spend most of the year pale and snowbound (I did include one bikini pic, but it's not going to be poster size. ?Blinding!), so they're mostly landscapes of where we've been. ?Only about 1/4 of them have people.?

  • 30 posters is a lot. Make some cuts girl! Do just 1-3 posters and then maybe a collage or an assortment of smaller pictures.

It sounds like an amazing idea but you could probably cut the # in half and then spend under $100.

He's a man. Will he really swap them out?

  • He has the gay gene Smile ?He really will take some down when he's tired of them and put up new ones for inspiration.

Like I said, none are full size posters, and most are more in the enlarged picture size.

Right now he has a whole (half) trailor to himself plus his own office, so he does have a lot of blank wall space.?

  • Well - you have had 2 say no and you have had come backs for each. Looks like you have had made the argument to do it yourself! Big Smile

Which means you must really want to do so, you should.

Can you save some of the gifts you already got for a future present - anniversary or something?

  • Everything's already in the mail. ?However, while arguing here, I have cut $40 off my order just by changing some of the sizes. ?So I am taking your advice. ?Just arguing back where maybe clarifying would get me a different answer. ?What can I say? ?I like to debate [:}]

  • I was debating with a good friend once about what I should do. She finally said "Well, from your argument it is obvious you what you want since you are fighting for it so hard."

Sometimes you just have to bounce it off someone else to validate your thinking even if it's to disagree.

  • I think 30 prints are excessive...
  • Yes, you're right. ?30 is excessive. ?So only 20 of them ended up being enlargements :) and I cut the cost down quite a bit by playing with different sizes.?

Honestly, I just feel bad for the guy who has not a single piece of home. ?No clothing other than uniforms. ?Beige walls. ?In a desert. ?At work about 115 hours a week. ?I had to send him tons of color for his room and office. ?Even if it all ends up in the trash in a few months, just opening the box and seeing the pile will cheer him up. ?Hopefully the cheer will go on the walls, too, since he's really been in the dumps and could use all the help he could get. ?His coworkers' spouses send packages everyday, and I'll never be like that, so I might as well be extravagant with one of my rare packages.

I also looked at it that a lot of these were ones I'd intended to blow up and frame anyway, so if they make it back intact, they get re-purposed.?

  • I think that sounds like a FABULOUS gift idea! So special, thoughtful, personal... and appropriate for you guys. LOVE it!!!!!

  • Do it. Totally worth it considering the circumstances.
