Re: 18 kids??

  • This honestly makes me sick. I'm sorry, but they're forcing the oldest kids to lose their youth/teen years because they're taking care of the younger kids.
  • Personally I just can't imagine wanting 18 kids. I would go crazy from the financial stress alone, let alone trying to actually care for that many children.

  • They have a show on TLC.  I know there was some hooplah about their financial situation at one point.  They were renting a house and got evicted and then all of a sudden they have this tv show and are building an umpteen thousand square foot home with an industrial kitchen.

Plus each kids name starts out with a J.  They have to run out of names eventually right??

  • I wonder what their tax deduction total is from all those kids.  Giving birth that many times has to shorten your life span somehow.
  • IMO it really bothers me. She's popping out 18 when I am having trouble just having 1.

  • I agree with Mel.  I think it's terrible to do that to the older kids.  And they have to schedule time with their mom or dad.

Ok I almost shot coffee out my nostrils on that one.

I agree. They are making their oldest ones do all the work and raise the youngest ones.

Do they even know the children as individuals?

  • I think it will be funny if the kids all grow up and refuse to have families of their own because they are so tired of being surrounded by people.

Or will they get out on their own and not know what to do with just one or two or three people?

Can you imagine being the girlfriend or boyfriend who comes into that family.  I thought DH having 5 brothers and sisters was hard to please.

The oldest son who was married in September wants to have a big family too.

  • I just want 1!  But that seems to be too much to ask.  I don't get it...

  • adding my .02 cents to the financial topic.

Don't they also claim their home as a church so I think they are (or were) getting some type of tax break or non-profit break from that as well, don't they? I could be wrong but I thought I read that somewhere.

  • DH watched the show for all of 5 minutes and said, "Her birth canal must be like a log flume ride at an amusement park by now."

I jumped ship when the family went to a creationist museum on a road trip, and the museum explained dinosaurs existed because Adam and Eve screwed up the garden of Eden and they were monsters sent by God. I'm all for religion, but that seemed they were trying a little too hard to make things fit.

Ultimately my opinion is, to each his own...and they can keep thier own.

I heard about that, actually.  I wonder what the wife thinks of that. I have to assume she's on board or she wouldn't have married him.  Just what the world needs. A whole new branch of Duggars overbreeding.

My innner paleontologist is screaming.  I missed that episode.  We have the fossils, we win!

  • They really creep me out. They seem like the sweetest people, but their sheltering and forcing the kids to take care of each other just doesn't seem conducive to anything but reproducing for the sake of reproducing. Their mantra is "children are a gift from God." Ok, I agree, but when you throw that gift at one of your older kids to raise, it's not fair to either child and downright selfish of you to deny them a proper childhood. I will say this though, the mom is some kind of super human - how anyone can squeeze out that many kids and still look cute and petite (despite the weird hair and prairie clothes) is beyond me!
  • The creation museum show scared me. I would like to imagine that there are Christian scientists that would disagree with the majority of their teachings. Dinosaurs and humans roamed the earth together...carbon dating thinks not!

But I do give the family credit that feed and clothe their kids without state aid.

Ahh yes, but the creationists found a way to explain fossil evidence and fit it into their creationist paradigm. It's creative that's for sure. But the actual museum was funny because it was a beautiful Adam and Eve display, and then a scary T-Rex. I kind of went, "Whaaa?"

  • They may look sweet, but they are imposing their ultra-conservative judgemental views on their children and to the rest of the world through their TV shows. The episode on "courting" really turned me off from them. They made it sound like I wasn't a Christian beacuse I didn't believe in courting and not kissing my husband before marriage. And that whole creationist museum really freaked me out. With the dinosaurs, didn't God create every being perfect and therefore made no mistakes? How could they make it sound like the dinosaurs were bad? I dunno... just my opinion.
