Getting Molly weighed to make sure she's gaining enough. I'm relatively sure she is, but the fact of the matter is:
1) she is *extremely* hard to burp. I mean, like seriously. I can get a burp out of her MAYBE one out of every three feedings. She ends up with severe gas cramps and it kills me to hear her cry (and this is the only time she really cries).
2) She vomits. A lot. Sometimes it drools out of her mouth and is only a mouthful, other times she projectiles, and/or throws up more than I thought she could hold in her tiny (?) stomach. It's scary when the flow doesn't stop coming.
I know she's growing- height wise, she is about filing out the 3m clothing I have for her. And she has a little gut. I'm just no scale, so hopefully she's gaining. Plenty of filled diapers (boy do those pipes work well), so that's not an issue either.
Also hopefully, our MD will have a solution for us. My laundry machine is getting a big workout these days cleaning the multitude of outfits, bibs and burpcloths I go through. I think we're talking some mild form of reflux, but I'm not a doctor so I really hesitate to self diagnose. I'm at the point now where I am holding her for over an hour (on my shoulder) of a 3 hour feeding cycle simply to keep the majority of the feeding in her stomach. And that is just not the best solution for my family- it leaves me with very little to give to Alex and my DH and that's not fair. So I think we may be trying some liquid Zantac next to see (the holding her on my shoulder was a request from my MD to see what happened).
I'm tired. Waaaaah. Waaaaambulance, party of 1. I want a spa day.
Re: heading over to the MD tomorrow.
I cannot believe Molly is one month already! Geez did that time fly.
GL tomorrow - I hope you and your doc can get it all figured out!
I totally totally understand your fustration with Molly 110% I feel your pain! I brought Austin to the Pedi, not once, not twice, but 3 times to make sure he didn't have reflux! Three different Pedi's too and they all told me it was just a laundry problem...I was so beside myself, because everyone was telling me it could be reflux - but the thing was he was never once fussy when he was spitting up/erupting like a volcano all over the place...I even began questioning my own diet, since I was nursing.
Here is how my routine was with Austin when he was a newborn at night:
- he woke up, I'd nurse him
- I'd take 20-30 minutes to get one burp out of him and if I was lucky he wouldn't spit up his whole feeding (or so it seemed like that much)
- I'd change his diaper and/or outfit if he spit up on it
- I'd put him back in the bassinet to go back to sleep and if I was lucky, we wouldn't hear him spit up again, but more often than not we would hear a "splash" and yup, have to change him again
- he used to have terrible gas, because sometimes we just could not burp him so it became routine in the morning to do "morning farts" with him - I'd do tummy circles and move his legs for him to get it all out...and there would be a LOT of lower gas...
- often we'd put him in the bouncy seat to sleep, so he'd keep his food down and we could get some sleep before the process would start all over again
- I used to have to do a load of baby clothes each and every morning!
I SO feel your pain hun!!!
After much research on the internet and worrying about what was wrong, I came to realize that I was the problem...well, not so much me as my breasts! I had a horrible horrible horrible over-active letdown and oversupply...therefore, Austin would nurse and fill up quickly and because the milk was still flowing, he'd keep sucking or I'd pop him back on when he'd pull off because he hadn't nursed long enough....as soon as I started leaning back while nursing and letting my letdown spray into a burp cloth before putting Austin back on....I found it helped tremendously with his spitting up...even now he still spits up a little here and there...
I just thought I'd share my experience, because I know a lot of people (including myself) are quick to jump on "it could be reflux"...I hope you get some answers!!!
OMG, she's gorgeous Heather! I can't believe she's 1 month old already!
I'm sorry you're having some issues with her . . . I used to burp Gabby on my shoulder with my back to the kitchen sink because I knew she'd puke as soon as she burped. Did that nonsense for almost a year. When I put them all together, it was comical the stacks upon stacks of burp cloths and bibs I had for her - LOL! Good luck tomorrow!
Well, was pretty busy today so I am only now getting a chance to update.
Lisa, it's actually pretty similar to your sitch. MD says she is sucking in too much air and overeating. So, I'm to keep her on the Mylicon and now take breaks every few minutes while nursing to burp her.
My first feeding when I got home worked better- I did get three burps out of her. Teeny ones, but burps. And they had a lovely barf chaser to them, but it wasn't like, projectile. And she's been out since (this was a 1pm feed), so she must be satisfied. She was over 9lbs at the MD today, so she's definitely gaining well despite being so spitty.
One thing I mentioned to the MD, that i was surprised she was overeating because my bjoobs didn't feel so full this time around...it's because they've already been stretched. I never thought of that. I was actually getting nervous that maybe my supply wasn't very good, but apparently it's just stealth milk. Sweeeeeeeeeet.
Thanks for well wishes and advice, everyone.
I'm glad everything went well. Hopefully these new tricks will work and you can get some well needed rest and family time. GL!
Hi Heather! What a cute pic I'm glad you found the root of Molly's feeding problems and hope it gets better quickly (sounds like it already is!).
