How bad is I-5/I-205?

Hey ladies! I have been following the weather there! It is crazy! We are trying to make it home for Christmas from eastern, wa. but if I-84 doesn't re-open we obviously won't be able to make it. My question though is how bad is I-205 and I-5? I see the news of course but they tend to be overly dramatic imo. If we have chains do and front wheel drive do you think we'll be okay?

Hope everyone is staying safe and warm!!

Re: How bad is I-5/I-205?

  • I'm new to the area so this probably won't help at all but wanted to give my two cents.  Embarrassed  My parents were on I-5 yesterday between Portland and Wilsonville and said it's pretty crazy there.  DH drove me in to work this morning via 26 and it was fine, everyone was going slow with their chains which was great.  It's the side roads that are horrible right now and you really need chains for those.  I noticed they did open I-84 but cautioned of more snow coming in tonight/tomorrow which could possibly shut it down so I guess depends on how long you were planning to stay and if you can get across today.  Whatever you choose to do stay safe and good luck!!!!

  • We drove on 5 and 205 on Sunday and it was pretty nasty out. From the news reports, it's waaay worse.  We have an SUV with snow tires, and were still sliding a bit. There were a TON of cars (non-SUV's) and minivans just left along the sides of the freeways.

Yesterday we were sliding all over McLoughlin.

Unless you have an SUV and chains or snow tires, I wouldn't do it.

  • DH went out today to grab some stuff at his office. He didn't take I5, but took 99W. With snow chains and an SUV he did fine. People mostly drive slow enough that you can be ok if you're used to driving in this kind of conditions. I84 is open now, but there is another 3-5" of snow expected tomorrow. Seriously if I were you I would postpone your trip. I know it sucks to not spend Xmas with your family but better safe than sorry.

We were supposed to go to the inlaws in Bend, but canceled that and DH's g-ma is in Roseburg and we're not going there until Friday at the earliest. It's supposed to warm up Friday through Sunday. Of course for us, with a 6 month old baby, we don't want to risk too much or spend too long in the car, so our situation is a little different.

  • I-5 through Protland is down to the pavment now...we are expecting a couple mor einches tonight but the freeways should be fine.  It is all the sides roads, even the main ones, that are the issue.  We have a small car, Neon, with chains and did OK on side streets and Fine once on the Freeway.  It is the A-holes in SUVs and Big Trucks that made is scary because they drive TOO FAST!

  • A lot of it depends on when you leave and what the temperature does.

We're headed up I-5 tonight (about 50 miles) so we can beat what tomorrow brings.

Stay safe whatever you decide! Happy Holidays!

  • Thanks Ladies! I am thinking that we are going to stay put. I know we can go see our Oregon family any time but I was hoping to see other family that is in town from Arizona and to be at my one year old cousins 1st birthday/christmas but I don't want to compromise our safety.

Today seems like it would've been the best day to leave but DH and I are both fairly new in our jobs since we just moved here in July and were not able to take today off. We are off the rest of the week so we will see what the weather does!!

Thanks again for all your input! Happy Holidays!
