I just received a $4500 ck in the mail!!!

So what do I do with it?

Background Story:

When I was job searching I applied to what appeared to be a part-time receivables position for Starbucks. When the person emailed me back, he stated I was in the final running as a candidate and needed some more information. Thinking to myself, wow, I sent over the information (general questions about my work history and such). Then I receive an email saying that I was hired and that all I had to do is receive checks cash them and send a percentage to an address given. First thought was damn it I thought I was getting hired by Starbucks..lol. Second thought was that this is a scam and I will just ignore it and go on my merry way. This was almost a week ago, yesterday I received an email from him stating that a check was mailed to me and I should follow the instructions provided. I followed up with a stern emailing stating that I was aware of the scam and that he should delete me from his system. Once again, I thought it was all over and went on my merry way. When I came home there was an envelope in my mailbox and when I opened it there was a $4500 check in it. What should I do with the check?

a) rip it up and go on my merry way again.

b) Take the envelope and emails to the cops.

c) cash it and go on a spending spree...lol (it's for sure a fake check)

d) Call the bank on the check and report it.

I'm lost for words at this point. This last two months of my life can be a best selling book!

Re: I just received a $4500 ck in the mail!!!

  • This is definitely a scam don't cash it.  I know someone that this happened to. They want you to cash it so he can get info on your bank account and take more money from you.  Where is the check from?  I think you need to take it straight to the police dept.
  • DO NOT CASH IT !!! I've seen plenty of reports on scams like that. You know what they say when it sounds too good to be true then its a scam.
  • Ditto pp's.

Unless you could cash it no strings attached at a check cashing place, which would be awesome but I don't think it's possible to do it without giving out personal info that would allow the scammer to rip you off.

  • this is SO not what i was expecting when i clicked on the post.

ditto the PPs. ?don't cash the check. ?it'll do you more harm than good, methinks.?

  • Take it to the police. These people are certainly doing this same scam with other people and you may have the opportunity to help shut down their operation before someone really loses out.
  • I would take it and the emails to the police.
Married 6/20/06~Mommy to 2 beautiful girls
  • I saw reports about this on Oprah. The account holders were cashing the checks and when the bank cashed the checks to receive the money the check was denied, then the account holder is responsible for paying back the funds to the bank. I would take the check to the police....... NOW
