Health insurance experts needed!

I lost my job in Nov.  DH is self-employed, it's far too expensive to get insurance that way.  Anyone purchase insurance themselves, what is your experience?  Any recommendations for a reputable broker?  The COBRA continuation rate is $916/month which we can only afford for so long.  Any info would be much appreciated!

Re: Health insurance experts needed!

  • When I was in between jobs I got a PPO from UNICARE for only $350 a quarter. I unfortunately got into an accident while on that insurance plan and I barely paid a penny, I would recommend it. I just went on their site and they had an agent contact me. I can try to find the person I talked to if you are interested.
  • DH has an individual policy through Humana for about $100/month. I'm not sure how much more it would be to add a family.
  • My company provides software to agents for quote engines, lead management systems, etc.

You can compare plans and run quotes on gohealth.com

You can actually apply for some of them online or if you find one you are interested have an agent contact you.  We quote close to 80 different insurance carriers, so you can get a really good comparison.

  • I am a licensed benefit consultant that deals with individuals and employer groups.  You have a couple of options.  Dependending on your termination date, you can ride out the election period and the payment period until you find a new job.  There are several carriers that specialize in the indiviudal market.  You can contact me at ellas314 at yahoo dot com or sarah at jkrug and i will be happy to help find you a solution for your and your family.
