? for the moms re: baby registry

Hi everyone!

Soon my hubby and I will be registering for our little bundle and I'm basically clueless when it comes to what is out there for babies that would be considered "must haves" (that is, besides the general things like car seats, cribs, etc.)

Since you've all sort of "been there", in your opinion, what are your top 5 must have things or things you'd definitely put on a baby registry?

I appreciate your input--thanks in advance!!

Leah

  • Congrats on your soon-to-be arrival!

The things I've used the most:

    1. Snap n Go stroller.  We have a Graco infant seat, so it just snaps right in, I don't have to take Sophia out of her car seat (we didn't get a travel system because I didn't like the strollers, we have a Phil & Ted's for big strolling trips), it's tiny and easy to maneuver in stores and folds up pretty small for transport.

    2. Baby bath tub.  We have the basic blue plastic one sold at most stores ( I can't remember the brand, 1st years, sure comfort, something like that).  I liked using the hammock attachment when she was really tiny.

    3. Baby monitor.  We have the Sony babycall and it works great.  I can hear her breathing, which is comforting when all you want to do is run in the nursery to see if she's ok.

    4. Space Saver high chair.  Not needed at first (we just set ours up yesterday), but I love that it is so compact and doesn't take up extra space in our kitchen.  Tray is top rack dishwasher safe, which will be nice for all those messes.

    5. Diapers, diapers and more diapers.  You won't believe how many you go through!

other helpful things: burp cloths (I use cloth diapers for this, works great), Dreft stain remover (awesome on all those baby messes), kickproof socks (Carters have some good ones), a variety of bottle brands (DD likes Dr. Brown's, but we've tried BornFree and evenflo), bottle brush, extra travel caps (those always seem to get lost), baby shampoo/body wash/lotion, square receiving blankets for swaddling (I got mine at Walmart, George Baby, square ones were hard to find), diaper bag (I have a Skip Hop Dash and I like it, just wish it was a tad bigger), cool mist vaporizer for stuffy noses (we have the Crane frog and like it), activty mat (we have baby einstein, Sophia loves it and all the toys) and jumperoo (probably her favorite toy right now, she will jump and be happy so we can get some things done).  I know I will think of some other things after I post this, but this is a good start.  Have fun registering!

  • 1. Bouncy seat

    2. Swing

    3. Fisher price booster seat/travel high chair. The regular high chair is nice when they are younger and need to recline, but we use this SO much now that DD is older. We don't even use the high chair anymore

    4. jumperoo (NOT the ones that clip on a doorframe, a freestanding one) or exersaucer

    5. Gerber Cloth diapers for burp clothes

Also, disposable diapers if you are going that route, wipes refills, gas drops, tylenol, vaporizer, baby q-tips, diaper cream (we like A&D), vaseline, washclothes, baby wash and lotion, baby tub, carrier (I want a moby wrap for next time), dreft stain remover or shout action gel stain remover, sleepers with zippers (snaps suck), onsies (long and short sleeved), hats, receiving blankets, some type of swaddler, extra crib sheets

  • Here were the must haves for us:

    1. Baby Swing...when DD was little they only had the battery operated swings, but now they have ones that operate on batteries and plug into the wall outlet.  DD would only take naps in her swing so that was a lifesaver for us.

    2. Boppy...I used it for breastfeeding obviously, but I also used it to prop DD up during tummy time and also propped her on her back with the boppy behind her head as a pillow.

    3. I second the kickproof socks.  DD's socks never came off her feet because we bought those.

    4. Infant carrier...If I could register again, I would have registered for a higher end carrier like the ergo, but any infant carrier allows you to get things done around the house or outdoors and baby goes with you :)

    5. Some outfits in 6-9 months or 12 months.  I know it sounds silly, but everyone gets babies outfits in 0-3 or 3-6 months, and when they get a little older you literally have no outfits for them to wear and have to buy everything yourselves.

  • Ditto JC.

I liked having a travel system that I could snap DS's seat into.  It was nice I never had to wake him.  I have the Chicco Cortina, but I know many people that also like the Graco Snugride.

If you plan on BFing:  storage bags, breast pads, boppy and extra cover.  I used a PISA pump so i used a lot of Dr. Browns bottles since you can pump right into them.

  • The American Pediatric Book for Birth to 5.

What to Expect the first year.

     The miracle blanket.

A portable swing as well as a swing at home.  We took our portable swing EVERYWHERE, including restaurants.  People look at you funny at first, but when your baby sits quietly through dinner, it's not such a bad idea...
