Cheap Date? Me?

Hey there...

Nope, this isn't advice on some cheap date ideas.  :)

How do you respond to someone saying that you're a cheap date?  I know that this comment was made in jest, but when you're father in law says it, I wasn't sure if it was a compliment or an insult!  What do you say when someone tells you you're a cheap date?

Thanks!

Re: Cheap Date? Me?

  • I wouldn't take it as either a compliment or insult.  Maybe you just enjoying doing simple things that don't require to spend a lot of cash.  Nothing wrong with that in my opinion.
  • In my experience it means you're tipsy off one drink.

  • If it were said about me, it would mean that I am not high maintenance.  I am happy going for a walk thru a park and picking up a slice of pizza for dinner.

A man spending money on me does not tell me how he feels about me.  If I ever dated someone who went over the top to impress me, I wouldn't be impressed. I would think they were a jerk.

  • I wouldn't take offense if I were you. It was probably just an observation that you don't require your date to spend a lot of money for you to have a good time with him.

  • Ya, no big deal.  I am a cheap date... Lol, I am very down to earth. I am far from materialistic and I would love to just go out to some beer and bar food.  :)  Its just that you aren't high maintinence.  That's a good thing..., I think it is anyway

It's not a bad thing/insult. I tell my H all the time that I'm a cheap date and we laugh about it.
  • lol, thanks!  Next time, I'll just respond with a "Thank you!"
  • I'm with Kimbus22.  To joke and say, "You're a cheap date," is a common comment/joke that means you get drunk/tipsy after just a drink or two.  With the implication being you're not very expensive for a guy to take out because you're "good to go" (shall we say, wink wink) after just 1-2 drinks. My description makes the phrase sound worse than it is, lol.  It is really meant as a fairly innocent, funny comment about someone being a light weight with their drinking.

Now, if you weren't drinking or talking about drinking when he said it, I'm not sure what he meant.

  • Thanks all!  I think I was just thinking about it too much.  Looking back...I'm glad I'm a cheap date!
  • I wouldn't be insulted.

Heck, when my DH called me to ask me out and asked where I wanted to go to dinner, I replied: "It doesn't matter, I'm easy".  LOL!!!!!  (poor guy, he thought I was "easy" in the OTHER sense of the word......ha ha"

  • My H has told me this from day one. Only because I order off the kids menu as an adult because I like the portion sizes better so our bill drops by a lot. It's not really a compliment to me just a little joke between us.
