Anyone wear Braces as adults?

I'm considering getting braces and am debating between the clear brackets that say on bonded to the teeth, for six months versus the clear aligner trays you change in and out. (Ie 6 month sm iles versus invisa lign.). Anyone had either done? I had "traditional" braces in middle schools, wore them for a year, then was transitioned to retainers but was not a good patient and this stopped wearing my returners. As a result my teeth are completely crooked again 20 years later. I have a very public face to face job where I speak one on one both face to face and over the phone, so that's why I am considering these options as opposed to traditional braces (the less noticeable and shorter duration the better). But I can't help but think its a gimmick and it can't possibly work. Any thoughts.

Re: Anyone wear Braces as adults?

  • I have full adult braces.  I had gone in hoping for invisalign but it was not going to fix the entire problem, I needed to correct my bite thus the full braces.  I have clear brackets on both the top and bottom, the current timeline is approximately 12 months with them.  The clear brackets are porcelain and just a more cosmetically please looking.

I think invisalign works very well for most people, it just was not a viable option for me due to the bite.  I thought braces would be worse than they are, yes it can be awkward.  We are very social and I have to be careful eating.  I tend to create more saliva (maybe tmi) so speaking was challenging in the beginning but I have adjusted to it.  I am thrilled with my progress and couldn't be happier with doing it.

Based upon discussion with my orthodontist and dentist, I would question a 6 month timeline on anything. I obviously am not qualified nor have I seen your teeth but teeth need consistency and from what they have said 12 months is the minimum time for any treatment to ensure the teeth don't move back.  GL!

I have Invisaligns. Since I also have a face to face job I wanted to be able to remove them for big meetings etc. I like them a lot BUT sometimes I forget to put them back in (you are supposed to wear them 22 hours a day) and thus I have lengthened by 15 month timeframe into like 16. My teeth are pretty crooked but my palette and bite were fine.

My orthodontist offeres a 6 month "express" invisalign for people who don't need much work.

I should also say that I've only had them about 5 months and I get comments all the time on how great my teeth are looking :)
  • Both DH and I have Invisalign. He's been in his for 2.5 years, I'm just a little over 2 years but no end in sight. If I had to go back, I'd do the regular braces and be done with it.
  • I didn't get my braces on until I was 18 and had them partially through college.  If I had to do it again, I would probably do the traditional braces versus an invisalign.  I have several dental phobia and getting impressions done once is far enough in my book.  If I had to do it every week or every two weeks I would be a wreck.  You could always do the white brackets if you go the traditional route.
