Can I play CPW, too?!?! AKA, should we get tattoos?

Okay, minor background: DH and I have 4 tattoos between us, that we both got before we met. Ever since we were engaged, we've been talking about getting small matching tattoos for our first anniversary, which is next month. We were planning to get our wedding date tattooed discreetly under our wedding rings (on the underside of the finger, adjacent to the palm).

We both have this week off of work, so we're trying to find some fun things to do so we don't just sit around and watch TV/go on GP all week. I reminded him that we wanted to do this around now anyway, so we called a tattoo place about getting these done today, and the guy DH talked to recommended not doing them on our fingers since they will fade and run really quickly. Now we're considering getting them done on the insides of our wrists instead. We figure that way we can still wear a watch or something if we end up needing to cover them up. What does GP think?

I like it, but definitely on it first since your plans have changed suddenly

That's stupid and/or too cheesy. Don't do it.

  • And apparently I can't edit the options, but that second one was supposed to say "sleep on it first."

  • I am very anti relationship tattoos. I feel like they doom the relationship. That's just my opinion though.
  • I completely agree with bruins. I love dh more than anything but I will never get something forever on my body that is "for" him. Like bruins I feel like its dooming the relationship

  • I don't have a problem with relationship tattoos, but I don't like wrist tattoos.

  • I have to ditto Bruins.

What about matching tattoos that are just something you both like? For example, if you both like sailing, you both could get anchors. It sounds so awful, but I really think relationship tattoos jinx the relationship.

  • The fact is, none of us KNOW that we'll be married to the same person forever.  We think we will, we want to, we hope to, but we don't know.

H and I have talked about getting matching tattoos together, but they'd be in memory of someone we love and not a reflection of our relationship, even though it is something that only the two of us share.

  • Thanks for the input, ladies, and sorry I ended up having to post and run!

As far as relationship tattoos go, I'm not particularly worried. I'm realistic about the fact that divorce happens despite everyone planning to stay married forever when we say "I do." However, I know that a) my marriage will be a major part of my life whether it lasts or not (and I think it will), b) I don't believe a tattoo (or anything) has the power to jinx or doom us unless we give it that power, and c) removal and cover-up are very realistic options for such a small, simple tattoo if I ever don't want it anymore.

I think my reservations are more along the lines of @nfp147's comment. I liked the idea when it was really discreet, but I've never considered a tattoo in such a visible place before.

Anyway, we ended up deciding to sleep on it for a while at least. I wasn't 100% behind the wrist thing and we couldn't agree on a font/design, so we're going to keep thinking about it.

  • Good idea :)
I want tattoo, but have never settled on exactly what I want. I think I know, but then I change my mind. If you sleep on it tonight & still want it there in the morning, then I would go for it. My original vote was to sleep on it.

  • I don't mind relationship tattoos; I'm not sure that I'd ever get one but the thought has crossed my mind before.  Lets be honest, I'm more likely to get a tattoo for my cat than my husband lol.

If you are worried about placement I would suggest getting a temporary tattoo, sticking it where you are debating on getting a real one and see how you feel about it after a couple of days.  If having a temporary tattoo on your wrist bothers you then you'll know that isn't the right place for a real one.
