Hillary documentaries

Anyone want to discuss the hubbub over the yet to be released doc about the yet to be decided potential 2016 presidential candidate? They haven't even finished production on them yet and there's an uproar already? Thoughts??

Re: Hillary documentaries

  • I am all for a Hillary Clinton documentary.  She is an interesting woman who has done incredible things with her life.  I believe, however, the timing is suspect.  NBC and CNN are left leaning organizations and it is difficult for me to believe this isn't just a campaign advertisement in disguise.

I would also be interested in a documentary about Mitt Romney, but if that had run in 2010/2011 it would also have left a bad taste in my mouth as a campaign advertisement.
  • Agreed but she hasn't even decided if she's going to run yet and the doc hasn't been completed....i think the concern about it being a political ad is premature to say the least.

i believe that after all this handwriting by cons, that fox news is actually going to produce a hillary doc. i saw it in passing and just laughed and skimmed.

i can give a link if you want it
Actually, I believe I heard that Fox TV might be producing the documentary. Although I do not know that for sure.  Much like NBC broadcasting is different than MSNBC, Fox TV is different than Fox News.
Who is creating/producing/whatever the documentary isn't my concern.  All I am saying is the timing is suspect.
  • What is suspect about it, @cincychick35?  Do you truly think that a documentary about her would win over the people that hate her? I honestly do not understand what the issue is.

As mentioned above, HRC is a very compelling figure.  A noted first lady, senator, presidential candidate, secretary of state...WOW! She is definitely someone I would expect to have a documentary made about her.

  • Missy, please see my post above ^^^^^

Ok now it's getting ridiculous. Rnc votes to exclude cnn and nbc from 2016 pres debates if they move forward with the documentaries.

  • Here’s a copy of the resolution, as provided by RNC staffers:
WHEREAS, former Secretary Hillary Clinton is likely to run for President in 2016, and CNN and NBC have both announced programming that amounts to little more than extended commercials promoting former Secretary Clinton; and
WHEREAS, these programming decisions are an attempt to show political favoritism and put a thumb on the scales for the next presidential election; and
WHEREAS, airing this programming will jeopardize the credibility of CNN and NBC as supposedly unbiased news networks and undermine the perceived objectivity of the coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign by these networks; and
WHEREAS, Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, contributed the maximum amount to Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign committee, contributed $25,000 to Obama’s 2012 Victory Fund, and this year contributed $10,000 to the Democratic National Committee; therefore be it –
RESOLVED, that the Republican National Committee calls on CNN and NBC to cancel the airing of these political ads masked as unbiased entertainment; and, be it further
RESOLVED, that if CNN and NBC continue to move forward with this and other such programming, the Republican National Committee will neither partner with these networks in the 2016 presidential primary debates nor sanction any primary debates they sponsor, and, be it finally
RESOLVED, that the Republican National Committee shall endeavor to bring more order to the primary debates and ensure a reasonable number of debates, appropriate moderators and debate partners are chosen, and that other issues pertaining to the general nature of such debates are addressed.

I don't know, it seems as if they do have some valid concerns.
  • The first whereas clause says it all..I agree the concerns may be valid but only if Hillary decides to run and she hasn't decided yet! It's just so silly and premature to have had an official rnc vote at this point ... and all this shows, in my opinion, is how afraid the rnc is of Hillary's chances should she decide to run which could have the opposite of their intended effect (ie people realize she'd be a strong candidate and vote for the stronger candidate).

So, the RNC should simply "relax" because Hillary hasn't formally announce her candidacy for President?  Isn't a wee bit short sighted?

"WHEREAS, airing this programming will jeopardize the credibility of CNN and NBC as supposedly unbiased news networks and undermine the perceived objectivity of the coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign by these networks; and

I believe these two points are valid.  Would it have been advisable to have Roger Eugene Ailes be instrumental in a Mitt Romney (or Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, etc) documentary in 2010, or would it criticized as a campaign advertisement in disguise.

I don't believe Hillary has a slam dunk in her court should she decide to run in 2016.  Many of my liberal friends adore her, but are too concerned about her health to vote for her (that's just what they have been telling me).
  • Yes, the Gop should relax on this issue. They are being paranoid and it's only making them look foolish. But again, I'm not a member of your party, so keep it up I say ;)

  • Ps no one said slam dunk. I said stronger potential candidate. And all the polls agree with me. It's not anything new.

  • Seriously, is there anything the GOP could do that you would not deem foolish?  LOL

I believe Hillary was a stronger candidate than Obama, and we know how that turned out!

    :-O
  • If Hilary does decide to run I'm pretty sure she will win.  I don't think I will watch anything political because I will already know the outcome.

  • I guess in the future, documentaries should only be about dead people.  That's the only possible solution.

And hello - re the timing?  2016 is THREE years away!  Hillary retired as Sec of State and holds no office, and is on record as saying she wasn't interested in running again.  If now is a bad time, when exactly is a good time?

  • If they were trying to produce campaign propaganda, why didn't they do it  back when she was actually running for something?

    :-O

Oh haha. YES! HRC is/was a way better candidate. Not that I'd vote for her anyway, but she was/is miles ahead of Obama.

Also, I do think the fact that she left her post as Secretary of State in Obama's second term of office is telling...meaning that she will run in 2016.

I think presidents tend to have lower approval ratings in their second terms (maybe there is or isn't factual data to back this up, it's just what it seems like to me) and I think HRC left her post to distance herself from Obama's less popular ratings - and the whole list of issues this administration has tarnishing (or in the very least, eye brow raising) it during its second term (Bengazi, NSA, Snowden, ACA, etc.).

  • Those things you listed aren't tarnishing the obama admin...those are things that republicans are citing to try and tarnish it, imo.

Perhaps I was not totally clear.  Again, I have NO PROBLEM with a Hillary documentary.  If Lifetime TV or The History Channel had one in development at this very moment, I would not have an issue with that.

My issue is having NBC/CNN running a Hillary documentary so close to the election is a conflict of interest. Ain't no secret they will be supporting HRC in the 2016 election and this documentary is nothing other than an extended campaign advertisement.  I can understand how the RNC is concerned about this, how can NBC/CNN run a fair, unbiased, impartial debate when they have gone out of their way to promote HRC for President in 2016.

Y'all must forget, not all voters are as engaged with politics as we are.  Ever hear the term "low information voter"?  I could totally see some people make up their mind based on a documentary, sad but true.

I agree with bolded. We've already repeatedly discussed here on P&CE the fact that all the news agencies are indeed biased in one way or another toward a specific political party or ideology.

We all know that NBC and CNN both tend toward a liberal bias. To say otherwise is like saying the sun doesn't rise in the east and set in the west. Saying Fox News isn't biased toward conservatism is like saying the English alphabet doesn't begin with the letter "A."

An HRC documentary prior to the 2016 campaign season is suspect, at best.

Consider the source of the proposed documentary. Like Cincy mentioned, it's not like it's coming as a Lifetime made for TV movie, out of the History Channel, or off of some other channel that isn't so heavily political.

    1. It is not close to the election.  An example of close to the election would be "Hilary: The Movie" smear job that Citizens United released in 2008.

    2. Hillary Clinton is not a candidate for anything.  She's on the record with CNN, Fox, Charlie Rose and I don't know who else that she is not interested in running for office again.  You're suggesting that they refuse to believe her?

    3. I really don't understand why it makes a difference whether it's the History Channel, Lifetime, NBC or Fox, as long as the work is credible.

    4. I don't why you assume this will be some sort of rah-rah, Hillary commercial instead of, I don't know, a documentary?
