So i am so tired of having entry level jobs like being a cashier or sales associate or factory worker. I have been working since 18 and have never had a really steady job and have a lot of experience in different kinds of jobs from a camp counselor, housekeeper, factory work 3 different kinds of factories (paper, making stuff for military, and silk screening) and retail of course . I want to better myself & career. I have never been a manager but I do have skill and i am willing to learn and do what ever it takes to become some kind of manager, but a lot of place require you have been a manager before. How do become a manager if you have never been one before, and not being promoted in store(no matter how hard you work). I am 25(almost going to be 26) I am tired of having a 'teenager" like job. I am currently a cashier at petco and have been with them for a little more than a year, but H & I just moved to FL and I have to start all over at this new Petco. I did apply for a management job up at the WI Petco. When i was up there my General Manager loved the idea of me being a manager and have had comments like this from lots of my bosses because i am a hard worker and do what I am told, but when the District Manager in Wi interviewed me she didn't like the idea I didn't have experience as a manage(BOO...) I eventually want to get into child care but have to get some schooling so until then I want a managers position. So i guess my question is how do i get that kind of job if a lot of places say they want that managing experience.  My GM here isn't very nice so I am not willing to ask him. Plus I do not know my other managers to well.

I tried to ask this question in the 9-5 board and got a snarky comment and was called childish. So I figured I would just ask my nestie ladies what they think. I think for now on I am just going to stick to our board everyone here is supportive and nice :)

Re: Management (how to help? (long))

  • Even though you don't like your current managers, you need to talk to them. Ask them what you need to do to be able to move up within the company. Are there "in between" positions available? You probably don't just go from cashier to manager, just like that. Are there head cashier positions available? Shift leader? Anything other than cashier? Unfortunately, you need to work your way up that ladder but starting a conversation with your current managers is going to help get that ball rolling. It might also help to take some business classes if possible. Sorry you got such a sucky response else where.

  • I agree that as much as you don't want to talking to your managers is where you need to start. And I think head cashier or shift leader is a good place to go instead of straight to manager. That way you are getting experience and the chance to show them you can handle more. As far as the 9-5 board that is why most of us just stay here. You will find lots of snark from other boards and our board is a very safe zone. Sorry you had to learn first hand.
  • Having been in retail a very long time (almost 18 years), you'll have work your way up. From where you are now, the next natural progression would be a lead position, like lead cashier. I would speak with your department manager first and let them know what you want to do (management). If that doesn't get you anywhere, or you don't like the company, there are other companies that look for lead sales. You'll move up, but only if you express your desire to do so.
  • I agree w/ PPs. H is a retail manager and he worked his way up. Talk to your supervisors about the position right above yours and work your way up from there.

  • I agree with everyone else that you need to talk to your current managers. You'll need to work your way up. Also, if you eventually want to be in a different field, why not just go into that field now? If I were a store manager and looking to promote one of my employees, I wouldn't pick the one who wanted to, eventually, go into a different field. Sure people switch careers all of the time but I wouldn't take the time to train you knowing that you're planning on jumping ship to an entirely different career. FWIW, I read the responses on the 9 to 5 board. I didn't see them as snarky. I thought that they were legitimately trying to help you.

  • I was lead cashier up in Wisconsin and I was going to be a customer adviser there as well but then we moved.... I would love to try to work my way up at petco but i do not know. My H works at disney and he says i should work there plus i would get to see kids all day and there are more opprotunities there since its such a big company. I do not understand how some people can be pizza boys(fact I had a manager who was a pizza boy before)and then be a manager then get caned cuz they had no idea what they where doing and had no skills. I had another manager at petco who had a great resume and interview they hired her and she did a horrible job and got demoted to cashier.
For now on I am sticking to this board you guys are all awesome and thanks for the tips anyways. no snarky comments like i got on the 9-5 board.

I did too and I really think they were trying to help, and I didn't see any snarky replies at all.

Bottom line is that you have to work your way up. It doesn't matter that you were doing the same job before in a different state/town. It could take years to get to that management level because you have to show the people at that current store that you have what it takes.

If you want to pursue a different career all together, then start looking into that now. Keep the cashier job for extra $ and then once you're done with school, go for your dream job.

I would suggest you come up with a plan as to whether or not you want to be a manager at PetCo, find a job with Disney or pursue a degree/certificate in child care. I'm not saying you need to decide the rest of your life, but it generally doesn't make employers happy to put time & money into training you and advancing your career for you to quit. Especially if your manager has helped you get that promotion.

  • Since you want to be in childcare, why not find a job at Disney in that area? I'm willing to bet they offer tuition reimbursement if you wish to get a degree in childcare. Again, you will probably have to start at the bottom and work your way up until you have either a certificate or degree. I would seriously research this, as it would be worth it. Home Depot helped put me through college, and I am sure Disney would do the same thing.
  • As a fellow retail employee...I feel ur pain :(    Ive worked for the store im at for almost 7 yrs and a year in NC before that (same company)....and Im just pet care lead...I was a lead cashier temp. few yrs ago when we had issues with the former manager for my department...then once she was gone...I was back lol.

But seriously...I hate talking to most of my managers too but until you at least try asking them what you should do....they are not going to look at you as management material.....when my petcare manager is out sick/vacation etc...I take over her workload plus mine...and do I love it? No but its the only way they will ever look at me as future manager option....sadly within my store..it will never happen..id have to go to a diff store for it to happen...but least the option and chance is there.....

I love animals...I love/hate my job...but I am not a school type of person and I get my animal helping out of my system at work lol....do I want to work here forever?? No...but...if it works around having kids and still am happy at end of day...I will work my way up if I want to and its there for me...or...I can move elsewhere...least I have the retail experience with me.....

Personally...Id leap at the chance to switch and do something at Disneyworld...but me..Id do something with their dog boarding..because that's just me...animals lol.     Its a great opportunity  for you if you really want to pursue childcare and Disneyworld perfect place for it....sometimes working for corporate pet stores sucks...I know :(

Only you know what you can do...but def. take time to think it over...because If you really want to switch careers...do it before they invest a lot of time and money into training you ....just my 2 cents :)

  • * I would like to add.. I do not mean for my post to come across snarky if it does...just fellow advice  :)
