Hosting a social for other military wives

Hey everyone! Our squadron wives group always does a once a month social to discuss business/deployment info and just hang out. Well, it's my turn to host the September one. While I love hosting stuff... I am at a loss and want to have a good party where they can let loose as most of our hubbies are away on deployment. Since it's September, I've thought of a couple of ideas: 1. Tailgating party (wear your favorite football/baseball/hockey team) 2. It's "wife appreciation day" like two days before I'm hosting the social.. so I thought maybe doing something like a pampering type party for them. 3. Obligatory fall party since September kicks off kind of the start of fall and apple season. Just do a lot of comfort food/fun fall items.

If you were going to attend a party, which one would you choose? Also, any ideas would be much welcomed! Thanks!

  • I love football, so I'd love the football themed party.  However, I know a lot of people who don't know the first thing about it.  I guess you could tell them to wear their husband's favorite team.  You could serve typical game day snacks.  Place them through out so people have a reason to get up and mingle.

  • Hmm, I agree with PP about the football ideas. I do not watch any sports but I think that might be fun. Pampering is always a win - but that might be more work to set up with skin allergies and such then a tailgate party.
    What have previous themes been?

  • Girl's in the past usually play to the season or something they like: Christmas in July cookie swap, Craft nights, Health food/health nights, Bunco night. I think the tailgate party would be the easier one and I didn't even think about allergies and stuff like that for the pampering night! Thanks :)
  • Sounds like a plan then! Plus I bet it will be nice having an excuse to wear their H's jerseys out in public.

  • I just had to buy MH a college team shirt because he has to wear it for a meeting on Friday. He didn't have one, and though I have about 20 football/hockey themed articles of clothing, he can't borrow mine.

I bristle at all this "wear your H's jersey". If I got an invite that said that, I wouldn't go because I'd expect ridiculousness. Like when I go to a super bowl party and there's a woman trying to be cute and asks why the team kicking off doesn't get 3 points.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • You know me, I have a crap ton of my own jerseys.  I only mentioned wear your husband's jersey for the girls who don't watch.  Of course, I'm usually giving the off questions the side eye, too.  I had a wife look at me the other day and ask, "What kind of woman actually likes football?"  To which I replied, "I guess the same kind that joins the Army as an MP because it's the closest thing she could get to a Combat Arms MOS.  Hi, that would be me."

Dude. I hate spouses like that. I'm already getting the side eye for leaving for training for the next year. "How can your wife leave while you're on this duty?". He shuts it down, but good Lord.
