Let me introduce myself

Hi ladies (and gents if there are any around)
Just thought I would introduce myself since I figure I'll be hanging around this board a lot over the next few months as we navigate all the necessary hurdles of becoming first time home owners.
We've got a realtor and we just went looking at houses tonight for the first time. :) very exciting.

Anyway a bit of back story on us:
We've been married 4.5 years. We currently live in the same apt DH has been in since his college days (nearly 20yrs!)
We will be moving my MIL in with us when we buy a house. She currently lives 2 hrs away, but suffered a brain aneurysm in Nov and is now in a wheelchair and unable to live on her own. (She is currently in a rehab facility but will be moving back to her own home with full time care in the next couple of months) Since DH is an only child, and MIL's only relative is her 90yr old father, the most financially logical move it to move her in with us (she is only 65 so it is far too soon to put her in a home).

Anyway, I don't have any home buying questions at the moment (other than why can't the perfect house drop down into the perfect location for the perfect price?) LOL

It is exciting to look at houses!

Since you are at the beginning of looking, I would suggest that you and your H sit down and right out a list of must haves and what you would like to have. This helped us out a lot. If the house did not meet any of our must haves, then we would pass on it. There were a ton of houses that we looked out. Meaning we drove by, but the neighborhood or the yard would not work for us so we scratched them off the list. The ones that passed this part, we asked the realtor information about it and then saw the house. There were also plenty that once we got the MLS sheet, we did not persue.

I would recommend having a flashlight and a tape measure with you when you look at houses. They came in handy. A lot of the foreclosures that we looked at did not have electricity. Also take a TON of pictures, so that you can look at the house later. We did not take pictures in one house and we disagreed about how the kitchen was laid out.

Welcome to the homebuying journey, it can be exciting and frustrating. But it is all worth it when you have the keys to that first home.

Feel free to ask any questions. We just finished the process in May.
