Wondering if this is a good idea...

So, as you all know, last week I dropped all my courses and withdrew from school. I am trying to decide what to do next. I would like to find a front office position in either a dental or medical office (I'd prefer dental). Some offices will hire someone without experience. However, the school I was going to attend has an Insurance Billing Specialist program. I was wondering if this would be beneficial? It's two courses this semester and two next semester. My boss was just telling me her DIL had gone through a similar program several years ago, but was unable to even find a job because either there weren't any or they wanted to hire with experience. I spoke with admissions yesterday, and the program is currently full, but he was expecting some openings soon (since people haven't either registered or paid their bills). I figured if I take the classes then that would give me a better chance at finding a job. I'd like to get some feedback. H thought it might be a good idea.

  • I think it would be good because even if you couldn't get a job doing those specific things at least you have medical training for a front desk position. Or you could look into working for a hospital doing medical billing I know here the hospitals hire like a team of people for this. So you may have like 10-20 people doing this job just for the hospital. Also with training like that you could get a job in hospital admitting so you have patient interaction but you aren't exactly working on them.
  • The admissions guy suggested the medical coding program after I get done with this, since the whole system is changing for next year. I'd rather work with patients directly, but I can't. Maybe this is the next best thing?
  • Does your school have information on the % of graduates successfully placed in their field? Or could you talk to admissions about that?

People said this about my paralegal program too. I had plenty of jobs to choose from so don't let that comment hold you back.

That being said, I like the idea of asking for a percentage of graduates who obtain jobs. You really seem to want to get into the medical field and this may be a great way to do it. Would you be open to finding a front desk job before you go through this program? Just in case you end up not liking it?

I'll have to ask the percentage question. I have been doing a little searching on front office jobs, but I haven't had much of a chance yet to write a CV or fix my resume (I think that will be another post soon!), since I've only just started thinking about what to do next. I'd like to get into an office relatively soon, since my last day at my FT job is next Saturday and my PT will only give me 6-20 hours a week (no guarentee of how many hrs). I figured these classes would be helpful to gain more skill and I can figure out where to take it from there. I feel like I'm flying by the seat of my pants at the moment.
