Sliding glass dog door

Hi I'm meandering over from theBump. I have a little papillon about 8 years old whos been using a dog door in and out of our playroom to get outside. We want to change our playroom back into a guest room and move the dog door into one of the common areas.

Are there any doggie doors that can go into a sliding glass door that will still allow the sliding door to open, close and lock?

Thank you!!

Re: Sliding glass dog door

  • I'm completely against dog doors, so no, zero recommendations here. I would never be able to relax knowing my dog could be outside unsupervised and prone to all the potential dangers that come with being an animal outside (wild animal or insect bites/stings [and possible allergic reactions], getting into something poisonous, an asshole neighbor being annoyed and poisoning the dog on purpose, cruel human beings who steal pets from their yards, the dog getting out all on its own).

Yes, these things happen every day. Not to mention not knowing if my dog were outside barking (yapping) its head off and annoying everyone around me, rather than being comfortably ensconced inside away from any dangers.

Wow I'm sorry pets live in such dangerous conditions where you are from.

Things are much safer and calmer in my area.  My dog is older and only goes outside (which is our backyard with a block wall that my toddler and infant run around in to when the weather is cooler) to do his business and then is back in where he can enjoy the AC and be with us.  He doesn't bark unless the doorbell rings.  And unless the Terminex guy isn't doing his job we don't have many insects in the back yard other than some flies since there is a dairy farm about 10 miles away.   So..... I didn't realize dog doors were such a negative topic over here.  I was hoping for some constructive or diy suggestions rather criticism that my choices on parenting my pup were life threatening when in reality they are not.

  • I was just going to post something similar. We have a large dog and want to put a dog door to give him access through the day. We only have sliding doors to the back and no room to cut a hole in the adjacent wall (though I don't want to hurt resale value with this). My husband found these types online and they are at pets mart type of stores too. For us, the panel needed for our 100 lb dog would really limit the space we had to walk through.

We looked into getting one in the glass panel when the door was installed but it was going to be like $1000.

I was wondering if anyone knows of dog doors that can be added to screen doors....

  • @enjoylife, I was not criticizing at all, simply pointing out the realities that many people don't even think about. My pup was stung/bitten by something in the first couple of weeks we had her at home, and we were outside with her at the time. The area swelled up quite a bit, and we're just lucky she didn't have a more severe reaction and that we were home to monitor and provide relief.

I'm not saying my area specifically has all these dangers; the list just covers the bases of what people all over the country have dealt with. I personally would never be comfortable with my dog having access to the backyard (which is fenced and she's never tried to escape) when I'm not home. She was also just skunked a couple of weeks ago, in the 5 minutes I let her outside at night to potty before bed. I wouldn't have wanted her running inside with skunk spray all over her face if I hadn't been there to address the situation. PS: Skunks climb fences.

Just saying, you never know what can happen. I'd rather monitor my pup's entrances and exits than let her have free reign to do so when I can't be there.

We have this one. My first dog, I trusted 100% to use the door, whether or not we weren't home. The two dogs I have now, I don't trust them at all so we haven't used it in several years. But I think I'm going to give it a try, just while we are home. My youngest dog looooves to be outside so I think she'll like it. My oldest one probably won't use it at all.
